I should be refunded my movie fee for the sheer amount of emotional/physical labor it took to not go to the front of the theater and kill myself in front of everyone when he yells "Fuck yeah video games" or whatever
I don't want a direct, "faithful" adaptation (of anything!), but I think I feel weird about this movie because it comes *so close* to capturing the silly/earnest dichotomy of RE, and then ditches earnestness in favor of Marvel/well-that-just-happened/*looks directly at camera*-did-you-get-it humor
Everything does!
Sick squibs tho
The movie does stay true to the comedic aspects, but it is chronically detached, never letting us as a viewer sit with fear, or dread, or regret, or hope, or relief, or any of the emotions that being a *player* of the games really elicited.
I really do appreciate that it captures a lot of the whimsical weirdness of RE--but (and maybe this is due to the interactivity aspect) but the games had a kind of earnest investment in survival that complimented that silliness.
I feel like the Resident Evil movie mostly stayed true to the source material by taking the most frustrating and tedious aspects of it ("great another lock," "where the fuck is ammo please," "Goddamn it, I have to fight guy *again*?), and ramping them up to a bewildering degree
