This week's new arrivals—upcoming from @archipelagobooks.bsky.social —the Jergović this Tuesday, the Mukasonga in November.

Two books: Inshallah, Madonna, Inshallah by Miljenko Jergović, translated from the Croatian by Ellen Elias-Bursać and Mizra Purić, and Murmurs from the Hills: Rwandan Tales by Scholastique Mukasonga, translated from the French by Mark Polizzotti.

"Whose deviation from the standard is art, and whose is error?"

Super happy about the Carson win but I discussed in this essay last year the double standards of who gets accepted into the canon of unconventionality and who doesn't.

ICYMI, I wrote about this gently surreal collection of stories by an unjustly almost-forgotten writer from Argentina. @transitbooks.bsky.social

This month's reviews are, in my opinion, a spectacular advertisement for Berlin's lit culture: an Irish writer who writes beautifully about home, a Berlin-based Arabic publisher and translator, and the city's pull on writers from around the world.

"Vapes and Lime bikes? Obviously related. What’s going on?
Batteries? Yeah, that’s it. Batteries. It’s not batteries, everything has batteries. They’re convenient? No, that’s offensively dull."

"Back at the traffic lights there’s blueberry-infused disbelief at the utter selfishness of it all. Someone shouts at me from behind as a sharp honk wakes me up. Green. The lights are green."

I'm always impressed by the range of your reading and thrilled to see The Red Sofa on your list! Such a perfect novella. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else mention it.

Daniela is a genius, and one of my favourite writers. Here’s why:

"To read Daniela Cascella is to be swept into an ongoing conversation within a maze of words, of voices, of images, of moments that catch one off guard, inspire, alarm. Her writing is energetic, continually in motion, seeking, questioning, listening for echoes in time and space." -- Joseph Schreiber
