Beautiful reading of maybe the earliest labouring class, or, more simply, worker's poem...

👂 What did medieval poetry sound like? Did it sound like the English we use today?

For our final September recommendation, we have to include "Teaching 'Beowulf': Practical Approaches," edited by Larry Swain and Ophelia Eryn Hostetter. Balancing both pedagogy and research, this is an invaluable volume for any instructor. Snag yours here --> wmich.edu/medievalpubl...

Cover of "Teaching 'Beowulf'."Text reading: "“Beowulf” is by far the most popular text of the medieval world taught in American classrooms, at both the high school and undergraduate levels. More students than ever before wrestle with Grendel in the darkness of Heorot or venture into the dragon’s barrow for gold and glory. This practical guide to teaching “Beowulf” in the twenty-first century combines scholarly research with pedagogical technique, imparting a picture of how the poem can be taught in contemporary American institutions."

Announcement: A selection of The Exeter Book’s famous riddles are now on display for the first time since the opening of the Treasures Exhibition in 2025. The Exeter Book is a treasured item listed on the UK UNESCO Memory of the World Register, preserving nearly all surviving Anglo-Saxon riddles.

Really pleased to have contributed a little chapter to this Palgrave Handbook of Medieval Literature and Science, and even more pleased that it exists, or will soon exist, and that it makes the case for scientific thinking in premodern literary periods: link.springer.com/book/9783032...

Remember seeing this creative and generous critical translation of this poem at Leeds in 2014. It was already a sustained project rooted in creative translation practice and research back then, and it is a good time to be revisiting it now.

Yet another knock-back, this time for a co-organised creative, collaborative and generous workshop I was very much looking forward to.

Looking forward to teaching Old English: Writing the Unreadable Past again, a module I've been teaching since arriving at UoM in 2014. After their first intro to Beowulf, it allows students to learn Old English but also encourages them to get creative with it:
