Another flow disaster in Nepal, just one catchment to the west of the Trishuli. This one is also caused by a landslide, but with a different mechanism - the landslide dammed the river and an outburst flood followed. Landslide was at 4:22 local time, and the largest flood pulse started around 6 am.

#nepal has suffered another significant landslide and flood event, this time on the Budhi Gandaki river at Chumnubri & Dharche in Gorkha. The cause may be a valley blocking landslide near Chumchet. At least 5 people may be missing and bridges & houses have been destroyed.

A new paper (Xie et al. 2026) provides a detailed analysis of the landslides triggered by Typhoon Doksuri in northern China in 2023. They have mapped over 100,000 failures, triggered by rainfall totals that exceeded 500 mm.

Examination of @planet.com satellite imagery before the 26 August 2026 Langtang Lirung landslide in Nepal, which initiated the massive debris flow and flood, suggests that there were surprisingly few signs of incipient failure:-

It is so frustrating that the Guardian describes this as "the collapse of a glacier". The report itself is very specific on this issue: "While initially thought to be a glacier collapse, analysis of satellite imagery indicates that the event actually involved a large rock avalanche".

A new paper in the journal Landslides (Wang et al. 2026) suggests that the bedrock failure that initiated the Nepal landslide disaster may have displayed measurable precursory deformation.
