Linguists help us understand that many of our pet peeves are actually language change in progress and the linguistic diversity found in and across all communities of speakers. With this understanding, we can approach each other's language with more curiosity and less judgment. #TalkAboutHumanities
I was asked yesterday about workload. I told preservice educators the unpopular truth: the needs of their students/families and expectations of their school board and Ministry of Education cannot be met by only working within paid hours, especially in the first years.
Oh No no no no no no. No advice here. I've never even thought about this and this is now a new fear unlocked.
Beautiful beautiful!
Beautiful!!
Sigh. To clarify, I meant more cohesion and collaboration between districts.
Tove Skutnabb-Kangas wrote in 1989: "Especially in relation to small children, it is close to criminal, real psychological torture, to use monolingual teachers who do not understand what the child has to say in her mother tongue" (p. 55). #literacies
This is so deeply upsetting. All I can think about is if the situation were reversed... What would it be like to have children suddenly in a new country immersed in a new school system with little support. (ESL push-in/pull-out is NOT enough, in my opinion.)
Thank you for joining tonight! We hope to see you for our October #literacies chat!
Thanks, @mgonzalezybarra.bsky.social for hosting tonight's chat! We're lucky that you're this year's W&L SIG's Comms Chair. Everyone, make sure you check out Dr. González Ybarra's work! #literacies
Yes! In STL, we have so many districts which feel so fragmented despite the fact that kids often move between districts. I'd love to see more collaboration and cohesion. #literacies
I love that road rage is included here 🤣
Yes!! Love this idea for transnational pedagogy and bringing in the experts like the grandmas, aunties, etc.! #literacies
Yes! I worked with students from a smaller ethnicity group in Ethiopia/Eritrea. They held community classes for their kids! I loved loved that. #literacies
Oh! What did you read by her? #literacies
A4 2/2: Later, I saw one of those students tell other students proudly about their language. On the other hand, I remember Mexican student mention they wanted to learn their family’s Indigenous language. I got the sense their family had experienced linguistic discrimination, which saddened me.
Y'all fulfills the real need for a second-person plural! #literacies
A6: I’d love to see both local community input as well as teachers connecting with language speakers across the globe diasporas for heritage speakers. Multilingual students are already usually engaged with media and family across borders and languages. I’d love more ideas! #literacies
A5 2/2: Cultivating students’ critical language awareness around language hierarchies is central to my approach to language teaching. For example, we discussed linguistic discrimination for speakers of Black Language as well as the intersection of histories and languages across the globe.
