I met an elem music tchr who had been learning Pashto because she had so many sts who spoke it. That was after learning some Arabic. Her classroom was so beautiful. And I don’t know if she’s even able to do any of the creative, purposeful work she has been doing. #literacies
I’m looking at an excerpt from How to Tame a Wild Tongue or I am My Own Language. But I want to read a few more things! #literacies
Literally picking something of hers tonight to have my sts read later this semester! #literacies
Tove Skutnabb-Kangas wrote in 1989: "Especially in relation to small children, it is close to criminal, real psychological torture, to use monolingual teachers who do not understand what the child has to say in her mother tongue" (p. 55). #literacies
There was a Polish school in the neighborhood where I taught. Sts graduated with a certificate in Polish language, culture, and history. It was amazing, and unsurprising, to see how the skills they learned there complimented their text analysis skills in, say, AP Lit. #literacies
17 in my country. And more charters than you can throw a stick at. It’s so hard! There’s no continuity. And I don’t know that a single district, which is floated every decade or so, is a good answer. Some districts are great at language support, community, admin, others aren’t. #literacies
I wish I could have more input on which classrooms my sts were in so that they were seeing this kind of student-centered resistance. I fear too often they see compliance, even when the teachers build strong rapport. There are many hard things in Texas now, this among them #literacies

A bit saltier, shorter. I was never on the other site, so this is the first time I’ve been on a site that limits characters. I’m also a relative newbie, so I always learn more lore! There’s so much lore, from here and the other sites where ppl brought the lore from. #literacies
Thank you for hosting, Dr. González Ybarra, and for being our newest Communications Chair! 💖 #literacies
Thank you to the W & L SIG Graduate Student Board, and the Bluesky team in particular, for continuing to build community in our SIG! #literacies
Answering this question in Texas is pretty awful. With such a rich linguistic history, and San Antonio being a locus of refugee resettlement in years past, this place is amazing. And most local districts closed their newcomer campuses this year. Teachers are scared. Silence reigns. #literacies
Yes! In STL, we have so many districts which feel so fragmented despite the fact that kids often move between districts. I'd love to see more collaboration and cohesion. #literacies
Thanks, @mgonzalezybarra.bsky.social for hosting tonight's chat! We're lucky that you're this year's W&L SIG's Comms Chair. Everyone, make sure you check out Dr. González Ybarra's work! #literacies
Thank you for joining tonight! We hope to see you for our October #literacies chat!
I'm excited to think about curriculum being created in partnership with youth and families. This sounds so beautiful! #literacies
Youth are constantly teaching us about the nuances in language! They truly are our linguistic experts #literacies
Yes! I worked with students from a smaller ethnicity group in Ethiopia/Eritrea. They held community classes for their kids! I loved loved that. #literacies
