A fox chased to death. A pheasant shot from the sky. Both killed for fun. Where’s the difference? Share if you agree.

1/ Nature is in peril. Drastic declines and specialist species struggling is what the Wild Bird Indicators, using BTO data & published by Defra, show. Here’s what we know ⬇️

The All Bird Species Index shows 19% declines in the UK since 1970. This comprises 132 species. 📉 #Ornithology

A Spotted Flycatcher, a small bird with streaked grey-brown head and dark eye, perches on a branch holding two damselflies in its bill as it turns its head to the right. Wording alongside reads: Wild Bird Indicators. Published by Defra, and using BTO survey data. OUT NOW! BTO logo is top right of the image.

Our ethos for Migweek is it has always been free for all to enjoy the miracle of migration but if you can support FBO by either donating or becoming a Friend of FBO then it would be greatly appreciated as we move forward in the future

This weekend, 17-18 October, is the International Golden Plover Census. WeBS data will be included in the census, but if you see any flocks of Golden Plover away from wetlands and are able to record a count, we would be very grateful if you could enter this to BirdTrack. Photo: Liz Cutting / BTO

We need your help - four of our satellite-tracked quail have gone missing in France! Any information would be interesting, e.g. if the signal comes from near a fox den, buzzard nest or hunting area 🦊🦅🔫 If you can recover the tag, we can re-use it - and you can name this quail 😉 Pls share widely 🇫🇷

Migweek day 1 Nets are going up at South Landing, if visiting the ringing please park in the pay and display car park not along the road verges as it’s a £50 fine if you do and may block access to the lifeboat station in an emergency.

The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation
