I make a living writing science fiction and fantasy. Mostly fantasy. It's been said I've never met a trope I didn't skewer. I'm good with that. Also, there's cats. And knitting. she/her

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'push' #BookQW #BookSky
We can't always find the nominated word, so when push comes to shove, we can go with a synonym. This unexpected encounter leaves Dan Mackmain badly off balance.
For UK and international purchase options - wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/book...

Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Debt by Juliet E McKenna. A grey wolf with pale eyes stands in the shadows of a derelict building with a black and white tiled floor. The wolf is looking straight at you. Its snarl reveals blood on its teeth and jaw.

Book extract reads: The shadows vanished and daylight filtered through the firs. I could hear cheerfully singing birds, and the murmur of a breeze in the needle-fringed branches above me. The hawthorn’s guardian gripped my bruised wrist as I knelt at her feet. I couldn’t fight my way free even if I wanted to. My arm was as limp as old rope.
She released my wrist, sending a painful jolt through my shoulder and into my rib cage. Her blazing gaze skewered me, furious, as she stooped to seize hold of my jaw, forcing me to look into her eyes, still on my knees.
‘You swore you would not trespass. Do not ever do that again.’
‘I—’ I have no idea what I was going to say.
‘Tell no one of your idiocy.’ She released me with a shove that rocked me back on my heels, jarring my spine from the back of my neck to my tail-bone.
Before I could even gasp at the pain, she vanished.

The idea of authors being in competition with each other is bizarre to me. Books aren't cars. We don't get just one.

Today's word is PUSH. Today's #bookQW from SAVED BY THE SPELL out November 3rd. (@dawbooks.bsky.social 2026) Yes, it's another magical school novel, but this time someone asks, "Will no one think of the teachers!?"

Available for preorder wherever you preorder things. Shop indie if you can.

On the left, the cover of SAVED BY THE SPELL: a classroom with a golden eye staring out of the blackboard and swirls of light covering the room. There is an apple on the teacher's desk. This apple does not appear in the book.

"Magic-users don't shoot people!" Beverly protested, gripping the edge of the table so tightly her fingernails were white.
"Why not?" Violet demanded. "Bang. Villain's dead. Hero gets to be a kid. Unfortunately, it was my first year teaching so no one listened and during the final, entirely avoidable confrontation, people died. It's been over three decades and the British government is still paying therapy bills." She took a deep breath and pushed her palms toward the floor, as if trying to stuff the whole concept of Heroes and Villains back into the mythic box it had oozed out of. "I emigrated at the end of the school year, re-certified in Canada, and I am not spending my last year of teaching the way I spent my first!"
A low murmur of comfort and understanding circled the room as
she dropped back into her chair. Sanya nudged the half empty box
of Timbits closer to her.

Today's word is TREAT. Today's #BookQW is from Direct Descendant (DAW Books 2025) a contemporary fantasy taking place just west of Timmins, ON, where small town values are subject to variable definitions but all the dogs are still good dogs.

Available in pb, audio, & digital. Shop indie if you can.

Lower left the cover of Direct Descendant, yellow and green and black with a bakery, a woman eating a cup cake, framing silver birch, and tentacles. Because it's always better with tentacles.

They tolerated the bloodlines and Daffodil had a somewhat- threatening version of begging for treats. Dexter had come embarrassingly close to eating a train engineer who'd strayed a little too far from the station. Oh, and they were terrified of Alyx's corgis, and it was hysterically funny watching the corgis lording it over a pair of hellhounds. Well, it was funny as long as Uncle Stu didn't catch you calling them hellhounds. Having hand-raised them, he was a bit over-protective.

Conservative politicians like to talk about the importance of having "skin in the game"– having something tangible at stake.

Ford cabinet ministers should show they have real skin in the game by cycling 5 to 10 km a day in central Toronto.

Calling a $13B deficit “better than projected” is not much of a victory. Ontario went from a $1.1B deficit in 2024–25 to a $13B deficit in 2025–26.

So why did your government’s spending rise so sharply, Doug?

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW #BookSky
Dan Mackmain has no idea what made the noise he's just heard. He'd never have guessed the challenges he'll face, way beyond his skills and experience.
Did you know The Green Man's Holiday ebook is a Kindle 99p offer now, price-matched elsewhere?

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: As well as a folder of information about the cottage for visitors, I saw a shallow wicker basket filled with leaflets. Fin started sorting through them.
‘There’s a lot of ancient stuff around here. A couple of hillforts. A Roman villa. This one has a couple of circular walks we could do, if we fancied looking at standing stones.’
She tossed leaflets for Wookey Hole and the Cheddar caves back in the basket. She knew I wouldn’t be interested in those. I’m too tall to be comfortable in dark, cramped spaces underground.
‘Right.’ I closed my eyes and wondered why it’s so hard to find furniture with a back tall enough for someone like me. I shifted sideways and slid down the cushions until I could rest my head properly. That made drinking my tea awkward, but I felt my headache easing.
I listened to the soft rustle of paper and Fin making faint noises of surprise and approval as she found something interesting. Then I heard something else. I opened my eyes.
Fin was staring at me, concerned. ‘Was that a cat?’

Today's word is KNEW. Today's #BookQW from INTO THE BROKEN LANDS (@dawbooks.bsky.social 2022) a created world fantasy with six POVs, two timelines, & a long hard look at what it means to be human. Kick-ass women & witty repartee included.

Available in pb, digital, and audio. Shop indie if you can.

In the upper half, against a background of tentacles, are the digital cover (tentacles and a broken tower) and the original DAW cover (a broken tower and circling crows). In the upper half, the quote.

If it was the story of the flying pig from the Captain's Chronicle and how many flying pigs could there be -Lyelee suspected None had
not told these children the ending. The pig had exploded. On the other hand, they didn't seem too upset about the loss of the sheep, so maybe she had. Lyelee made a mental note to find this Nonee and see if she knew why the pig had exploded. Neither the chronicles nor the Archives had included what was inarguably an important detail.
