Writer from Manchester. LIKE A CAT LOVES A BIRD, my biography of Muriel Spark, out now! πββ¬
@ianrankin1.bsky.socialReposted by @drjamesbailey.bsky.social@drjamesbailey.bsky.social I didnβt think I needed another biography of Muriel Spark. Turns out I was wrong. Kudos.
@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialThat means a lot, Ian - thank you
@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialAh thank you so, so much!
Some trivia - that line was inspired by the following clip from Coronation Street: youtu.be/xgMbJcAkfxA?...

Like a golden leaf, it's time to gently drift into the 1st read of the Autumn season. On Chapter 3. Your writing is exquisite and the sensation is that of reading a novel. Love this sentence: "The word is a lid shut tight on a howl of despair.": referring to 'cope'.

@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialReally enjoying listening, Jan!
@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialItβs great, isnβt it. Spark refusing to budgeβ¦

@drjamesbailey.bsky.social(also, itβs βcyclops autumnβ by now, surely)
@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialI went to see The Odyssey last weekend and the man sitting next to me filmed himself reacting to various scenes for his Instagram stories. After the cyclops scene he posted βcyclops summer!", and I lay in bed that night with "cyclops summer!" going around and around in my head.

@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialOh god, my apologies - thatβs like an anxiety dream / something from Ishiguroβs The Unconsoled

@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialBeautifully put. By the way, Iβve just noticed that Iβm on a couple of hours before you at the Todmorden Book Festival! todmordenbookfestival.co.uk/whats-on/

@jancarsonwrites.bsky.socialReposted by @drjamesbailey.bsky.socialEnd of August. I read a lot of totally mediocre contemporary novels this month and a fair few absolutely cracking books. These were my favourites.
@bookwormjan.bsky.socialReposted by @drjamesbailey.bsky.socialWhat an excellent biography. Muriel Spark could never be pinned down and the author accepts this but still manages to cover her life and novels in detail in such a way that you say "Oh yes, of course, what an amazing woman" and "Oh I thought the same about that book. Thank you". Highly recommend.
@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialThank you so much, Janet!
@drjamesbailey.bsky.socialIβve heard itβs alright π€·
