One month to go until #COP31 🌍
ECMWF is a UNFCCC Observer and will be attending this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference, which takes place from 9 to 20 November 2026 in Antalya.
Our delegation will participate in various panel discussions and meetings, including Earth Information Day.
🔥Wildfire emissions can affect air quality far from where fires are burning. During summer 2026, several smoke plumes from North America crossed the Atlantic towards Europe, while fires in Indonesia exposed populations to very high PM2.5 concentrations.
Behind every weather forecast lie millions of observations gathered from satellites, aircraft, ships, buoys and other instruments.
ECMWF monitors these instruments throughout their lifecycle, from their rollout and evaluation through to their retirement.

🌫️ Air pollution knows no borders. Around 2 billion tonnes of sand & dust enter the atmosphere every year. In 2026, smoke from North American wildfires regularly reached the Arctic & crossed the Atlantic to Europe.

CAMS Atmosphere Watch 2026 report is out now! This report was compiled by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), which is implemented by ECMWF. It provides an overview of key topics in air quality and atmospheric composition. ⬇️
It was an honour to contribute to this @africacleanair.bsky.social webinar and present a short overview of the work we do in the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service and how to access our open data in the context of African air quality.
Polytope is our data-access system for extracting specific features directly from large datasets. It can substantially reduce transfer volumes & simplify workflows, changing the user experience.
🌍🌐 Registration for Course 3 of our ML training series under the EU DestinE initiative is now open. Explore explainability, foundation models, hybrid modelling, downscaling, coupled Earth systems and AI forecasting pipelines. 📅 5 October | Online

📣 Mark the date! On 30 September, #CopernicusAtmosphere will release the first edition of CAMS #AtmosphereWatch, a new publication exploring how ground-level ozone, wildfire smoke & dust plumes travel across borders & affect air quality far from their sources.
Stay tuned!

Rivers across the globe in 2025 had one of the driest years in more than 3 decades.
The WMO Global #StateOfWater Report 2025 shows a continuation of the long-term decline in Earth’s freshwater storage and in glacier retreat.

The State of Global Water Resources 2025 report of the @wmo-global.bsky.social is out now.
ECMWF supported the report’s assessment of river discharge conditions worldwide with river flow data from two global modelling systems: GloFAS and ecLand-CaMa.
What if AI could transform observations into forecasts without traditional Data Assimilation (DA) steps?
At our Annual Seminar experts explore the next frontier:
🤖 ML systems beyond DA enhancement
🌍 New approaches to Earth system prediction
