๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ New working paper! What happens to citizensโ€™ democratic priorities when power changes hands? We (w/ Natasha Wunsch) explore this by drawing on a three-wave panel survey and a repeated conjoint experiment fielded around Hungaryโ€™s April 2026 elections (1/4, link at the end)...

Ik maak het argument dat goede vertegenwoordiging meer is dan de kiezer napraten. Goede politici volgen de meerderheid niet, ze creรซren die!

My thoughts on the Latvian elections for LSE blogs. Latvia steers right, as radical right parties massively increase the number of their seats and major centre parties lose support. However, the radical right in Latvia differs from that in many other European countries.

Why do green parties struggle electorally despite widespread support for climate action? My new (first ๐Ÿ˜ฑ) paper explores why green parties remain uniquely challenged in economic crisis & that the mechanism is not only about sociotropic concerns, but also votersโ€™ pocketbooks ๐Ÿงต

๐Ÿงฉ Do voters dislike parties that mix left and right positions?

In ten countries, @rdassonneville.bsky.social, Patrick Fournier & @zeynsom.bsky.social find voters know less about such parties and like them less, in part because of the inconsistency itself.

๐Ÿ”— doi.org/10.1080/0140...

Description of the article "Voters' perceptions of ideologically inconsistent parties" by Ruth Dassonneville, Patrick Fournier and Zeynep Somer-Topcu, published online first in West European Politics.
Figure 2. Line chart of predicted party like/dislike ratings by how ideologically inconsistent a respondent perceives a party to be, with a histogram of observations underneath. Ratings fall markedly as perceived inconsistency rises.
Figure 3. Line chart of the effect of expert-rated ideological inconsistency on party like/dislike ratings, by how accurately a respondent perceives the party's positions, with a histogram of observations underneath. The effect is negative for respondents who place parties accurately, shrinks towards zero as their perceptions grow less accurate, and turns positive when they are far off.

Not suprising that the Linke got the most votes among younger voters in Berlin. Yet, the size of their vote share among under-35 year-olds is stunning.
