New interview out with me on the New Books Network! I'm on ep 1525 of the 'New Books in Environmental Studies' series! 😻
Jana is a deep thinker so in our talk we sorted through some big issues - what is 'native'/'wild'. What makes #envhist more than nostalgia. πŸ€”πŸΊ

Turner recorded White Herons In Britain in the 1500s which were the same size and shape as Grey Herons, he also recorded that the white birds were rare and that they sometimes hybridised with Grey Herons which Conrad Gesner mentions as hybrids were challenging intellectually.

Japanese team have observed directly, for the first time, noctule bats hunting birds
The images they provide astonishingly resemble that painted by Brueghel over 400 years ago... maybe he had actually seen the hunt!!

Just read this paper. So fascinating, please pass on my congratulations! I always think of lizards as being associated with the driest areas so I might have to rethink my refugia positions now! I wonder if it is instinctual. 🦎🀯

Here is a blog post about my new book, and the little acts of rebellion that come from researching the history of animals. πŸ¦ŠπŸ’š
#animalhistory #envhist πŸ“— #animalhistory #medieval www.ui-deref.de/r/?to=https:...

Text from an article. The highlighted bit says:
I am, probably much to the disgust of William of Malmesbury, very much on Team Animal, so I enjoy this poem as a little act of rebellion on the part of the much-persecuted wolf.

πŸ“£ new #bear paper! Dr Liam Lewis and I gathered the evidence for bears and bear-baiting in #medieval England and northern France. We looked at bones, literature and archival accounts. We found that evidence for live bears increased after the #Norman Conquest 🧡

A sculpture of a muzzled and chained bear lying down with its right front paw crossed over the left. It’s carved as the floor rest on the tomb of Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick, located in the Beauchamp Chapel at the Collegiate Church of St Mary in Warwick. Photo by Liam Lewis.

Ah no sorry, the subtitle is Britain's Lost Species so this is about real animals that went locally extinct. Some have recolonised or recovered like red kite and sea eagle, some are still absent like wolf and lynx, some are gone for good like grey whale and great auk πŸ³πŸ§πŸ¦…πŸ¦«πŸ¦«πŸ†πŸΈπŸ—πŸΊ

I've also been making short (100 second) videos on Instagram going over the sources from the book. - Here is my video about the lost burbot, a freshwater cod that used to live in the Fens! I'd love to have more community there, please come find me! 🎣
