Tank you! The results (the spore capsule and the others) are great. The keeping still part is the main reason I do lichens instead of birds. Do you have a specific setup for this - and would you be willing to share a picture of it?

@peterbraubach.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:34 AM

If you want to flip the image for cross-eyed stereo you can copy/paste the image URL in the zerene stereo viewer (zerenesystems.com/webapps/sv1....)

Moss spore capsules usually have 1 or 2 rings of peristome teeth around their open mouth. In Tortula muralis, the teeth are long & spirally twisted to form a slender tube that twists & untwists in response to humidity changes. This peristome is 1.4 mm long. Stereo pair; viewing instructions in ALT.

An orange-brown tube of spiralled threads, open at the top where the threads are unravelling and un-twisting to release spores. A few tiny pale green spores are visible.
To view this side-by-side stereo pair in 3D, use the viewer from my book, or try to look at the left photo with your left eye and the right photo with your right eye. If you can do Magic Eye, it's the same technique. Cardboard tubes might help and keeping the picture small certainly makes it easier.

Very nice stereo! Synthetic (with Zerene?) or physical with repositioning of the camera?

@peterbraubach.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 11:22 AM

I will have to look this up. It feels like the most basic Zeiss model with ok colours, rolling shutter and a very low frame rate. Enough to show somebody what is going on (the scope is mine, the camera from the clinic)

Oh very nice. I have a BX61 which I will hopefully bring back into productive use soon. Might still count as vintage :-) even with the slanted top. The BX2 (41/51/61) lacks the blockyness. I once missed a good deal on an IX81. Still sad sometimes about this.

Sedifolia-grey pigment in epithecium turning violet in K.

Ap section in water with grey epitheciumAddition of K (KOH) to the sample turns the epithecium intensely violet.

I haven't been #lichen posting regularly but hope to resume. Here is some Rinodina pityrea from trunk base of an old poplar.

Does anyone happen to recognise this white fungus on the underside of Bramble (Rubus fruiticosus agg.) leaves? I've not been able to find any particularly helpful structures, but wondered if it was a mycoparasite on one of the Rubus rusts?

Maybe @ruhrpottpilze.bsky.social can help?

@peterbraubach.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 7:22 PM

And oblique.

If these still show up on a thin film I might be able to pick these with fine pins (acupuncture needles) -- this would be the next experiment.

Bright field also looks good. Now mostly everything has settled to the tripod state and the mesmerizing twirling has stopped.

The exchange with @isabelrfernandes.bsky.social made me at least test the stereo microscopes capabilities. I so whished I could show the mind blowing 3-dimensionality of the #Aquatichyphomycetes spores in water (everything in the sample is fixed, nothing to culture unfortunately).

I want to be sure first that I have reliable contamination free agar before trying out the "sterile zone next to a Bunsen burner" stuff.

@peterbraubach.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 6:39 PM

I want to try isolating one day - one thing keeping me from it is that I have neither facilities for nor experience in casting agar plates. Everything would have to be done in my small Home-Office. And then this spore was 1 in 10k or more.

*I adore the black Leitz Ortholux I but would never use it for day to day work... and I don't have one :-(

I think the Olympus BX50 from the 2000's is one of the most beautiful microscope frames*. It like the clear, geometric lines. More architecture than product design.

Any other vintage BX here?

If you see me awkwardly handling a 3m collapsible carbon fibre pole with a kitchen strainer taped to it its to get some foam from the river.

I cannot really place this one. Is it some Campylospora sp. or Gyoerffyella sp. What do you think @jandbio.bsky.social @fayrnhawk.bsky.social?

Strange formed spore with pointy ends. approx. span 28x28 Β΅m.

The autumnal Ilmenau in #LΓΌneburg yielded a foam sample rich in #AquaticHyphomycetes - in all forms and sizes.

Notably absent are Clavatospora longibrachiata and Articulospora tetracladia.

A sample of aquatic hyphomycete conidia(spores) stained blue and with interference contrast microscopy. One large spore with 4 arms dominates the picture centre.
