@emilyrinkema.bsky.socialWhat a story by @kathyfish.bsky.social. The structure is incredible, the way it all turns in the middle and then the second half mirrors the first...but in a more fragmented way, like childhood memories, there, but off, needing to be excavated. So freakin' good.

@emilyrinkema.bsky.socialof how close we are to the edge at all times. "Aunt Joy Dies..." made me cry--the ending is so good. And the first sentence ("The best thing about Joy was her grief.") is that balance again! It may sound hyperbolic, but I really do feel changed after reading this collection. So freaking good.
@emilyrinkema.bsky.socialand in "Blackberries," how she cuts the homey comfort of berry picking w/ the truth of the future (present), and then weaves in the maternal gentleness cut by the crushing of the baby bird...both exist at the same time, again, like life. I feel this balancing in all of the stories, an awareness...
@emilyrinkema.bsky.social@allisonfieldbell.bsky.social makes me feel so completely safe in her writing, and yet on edge...it takes so much skill. And because I'm this far in to this post, here are a few examples of that edge. In "Yes," the turn (literally!): "But then she turns away from me, a crescent moon of body..."
