Proud to be a designated spokesperson for the anti-AI humanist movement in this excellent @newyorker.com piece. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Paragraph from linked New Yorker article reads: This is not A.I. populism, as Sun describes it, so much as anti-A.I. humanism; its champions worry about what would be left if human pursuits became pointless. I was struck by how many A.I. skeptics converged on the same formulation: what is this activity for? When I called Lila Byock, a mother of two and the founder of Schools Beyond Screens, a coalition fighting the influence of big tech in schools, she said, “I think that we just need to ask ourselves, like, what is school for? What is education for? One of the really basic problems with using A.I. in education is that it is designed to make tasks easier and to reduce friction, and friction is how learning happens.”

At a moment when major public school districts like LA and NYC are leading by example to protect students from predatory tech companies, "AI-based" Alpha School is requiring students to chase clout on a dying social media platform. These kids deserve so much better.

Yes, this:

A screenshot of Audrey Watters’ weekly post that reads, “This growing rejection and refusal of technology – inside and outside of schools – is about much much more than the technology itself. It is, in part, about the loss of control; the loss of agency, autonomy, and privacy. It is a response to the oligarchs’ efforts to undermine democracy. It is about these billionaires’ dismal, dystopian vision for the future – a wanton destruction of the planet writ large and local communities writ small; their apparent hatred for home and humanity alike.”

Wins against GenAI are “win[s] for democracy - for all the teachers and parents and students who said to district leaders that moving fast with ‘AI’ was going to break things, break people; who asked that their needs be met, their voices be heard over the needs and voices of vendors” Audrey Watters

A statement from the Canadian Teacher's Federation calls AI in schools and the cognitive offloading it causes "threat to democracy".

Vancouver should be banning AI from schools like NYC and LA.

Concern Cognitive offloading as threat to democracy and prosperity
Relying on Al systems for learning without trained educator in the loop negatively impacts
student learning (Brookings, 2026). Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) study
found that students writing essays with the support of Large Language Model (LLM) had
weaker neural connectivity, produced less original work, and felt lower ownership of their
outputs (Kosmyna et al., 2025). According to the OECD (2026), “genAl systems may enhance
the apparent quality of student work...without improving their actual learning” 20).
Brookings (2026) warns of ‘great unwiring’ of students’ cognitive capacities” 56), with
studies finding strong links between AI use and cognitive offloading. One of the concerns
raised by Canadian youth participating in the Gen(Z)AI forum on Al chatbots was “cognitive
offloading and loss of critical thinking skills among users, which can jeopardize their ability to
learn, work, and engage in civic discourse” (Case, 2025,

Huge shout-out to everybody organizing in NYC and LA public schools - and beyond! - to fight Big Tech and defend publication education. You truly love to see it.

For the night crowd: the wins you’re seeing in NYC and LA this week did not fall from the sky. They are the result of literally thousands of hours of organizing by parents, teachers, advocates in both communities. These wins belong to them - and the millions of kids in both cities who will benefit.

This is the LA County Office of Ed, separate from LAUSD. Very disappointing nonetheless.
