Chris Wickham’s death. I’m very sad. Chris was my tutor, he sat through undergraduate seminars with grace & enthusiasm & came to a fancy dress party I hosted dressed as Zapata. Not just a medievalist. He credited his mother’s photos in his early books. A delight of a human. “Always ask, why now?”

Siegfried Sassoon, Poet, #BornOnThisDay in 1886, in Matfield, Kent, England

From ‘The Last Meeting’:

“I know that he is lost among the stars,
And may return no more but in their light.
Though his hushed voice may call me in the stir
Of whispering trees, I shall not understand.”

Siegfried Sassoon
