A few months ago I got to design the staff t-shirt for The Hobbit x MTG! I relished painting some of the pivotal characters and elements of the story. The stylization is inspired by Tolkien's own paintings, and I wanted it to look as though Bilbo had drawn these things in his book.

A stylized collection of images from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Featuring characters Smaug, Bilbo, Beorn, and Gollum, and artifacts like the One Ring, Thorin's Key, the Arkenstone, and Sting.

Some close ups. I drybrushed the acryla gouache to create the texture, and then cut out the forms using white paint, to create a clean edge. It was important to create a texture that could translate to screenprint. Blue was used as the 2nd color because it could be easily separated from the bg.
