We love this ‘let’s just connect attitude’ - Patrick is not only a great writer, editor and contributor to the collective, his work doing creative writing workshops in prisons is a fine example of his commitment to the community-minded benefits of writing and reading…

Fungal Misadventure: a short short story I wrote, which I've decided to tell here in the form a thread, using eleven photos I've taken of excellent fungi on my walks, and one I took of quite a fancy chicken...

Congratulations to Nicole Swengley on the publication of her ‘artful’ mystery, Fallowfield! An evocative backdrop of the art world informs this rich, twisty and immersive novel, ideal for fans of amateur sleuths, moody mysteries, dark academia, 70s culture, and both popular and high art!

Images show a celebratory graphic of the book’s cover, featuring daffodils, which play a significant part in the story, a contemporary woman in her mid thirties in silhouette and a background of a Palladian mansion. Other graphics are a poster of the blog tour for the book, Which is getting fantastic reviews, And screen grabs of the interior praise pages.

Huge congrats to Karl Diesseroth for his share in a @nobelprize.org for his work with light and the brain. I very much enjoyed his book, Connections, indeed his work is referenced in The Fire In Their Eyes, and also gave us the random prompt for Alexander The Mate for @breakthroughbook.bsky.social

Throw in more m dashes.

Ps… she credits some of the direct inspiration in her acknowledgements. So those would be designers ceramicists and artists you could then explore more?

@brethertonwords.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 12:45 PM

I’m not sure there are any direct connections. It’s more that the author has been a journalist in art and design for many years and that’s the world from which she drew much of her inspiration. But I guess you’d have to visit the show and / or read the book, but only if actually either appeals?

Having a LOT of fun with the ‘side’ project. A little bit of genre writing under a pseudonym. But what opportunities there are to just let the words flow when you don’t need to do any research.
And you can indulge Paul Bettany’s Chaucer character with a little literary evisceration.

“Rollicking absurdity,” says Frances for the Compulsive Reader — an excellent resource for the bookish — in her glowing review of Curious Events Lately Occurring in this Neighbourhood by Tom Cox. “Captivating” indeed…

What connects being an artistic detective with insatiable curiosity? How do you become a QI elf? How does a fascination with neopaganism and the folk renaissance lead to a 5 year quest, resulting in a new book? Excellent interview with Awakenings author and ‘great eccentric‘ Stevyn Colgan below:
