Hello new followers! I've removed the paywall from this piece, which is a chapter from my novel Villager, told entirely in the form of an online village message board. If you like it, you'll probably like the book. If you don't, you probably won't...

I am very much enjoying ‘Everything Will Swallow You’ and also thinking that I can cement my reputation for irreverent reading recommendations at my book club with this one!

Thanks Rebecca. Lovely to hear. Always nice to mess with the reverent.

I love thinking that there will still be bookstores in our future. Or a future.

I try to write them the way I like to read them!

I’m not a great reviewer of books. But this seems to me to be a quiet book (so far, at least…I’m on page 83) that will stick with me after I finish. I’m savoring it.

A thread about a great cat, and the post-retirement creative evolution of a great artist, in 20 images...

Good day, Womble! I’m currently reading the latest Murderbot book (Platform Decay). But I am also reading @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social ‘s Villager and enjoying it immensely.

A lot of people have commented that it's a very "autumn" kind of book. That's probably true.

Write the book you would like to see someone pull from a higgledy piggledy pile in a secondhand shop 63 years after your death and say, "This looks fucking weird. I think I will buy it for Joan.”

And of course, Blackwell's UK will send it to you with free international delivery so you can have the special privilege of being one of around 23 people who own the book! Maybe even 26 by the end of today if I am super lucky! blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...

I’ve seen him!! He does “mind your car mister?” for a pound a car outside Carlisle’s ground Always wants paid in advance but I think he buggers off as soon as the game starts

@dj-acid-reflux.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 8:58 AM

Of course! I gave him all the money I won off Keith in the golf…

@dj-acid-reflux.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 8:49 AM

Ponies and horses can be so kind. Here is one I asked to guard my car for me. Told him I’d definitely be back in no more than 45 minutes then ended up gone for a whole six hours. He stayed diligently at his post the whole time. What a guy!

A horse with bootcut trousers looking after my Toyota Yaris on Minchinhampton Common several years ago. Additional fact: this was the day I was sent by a newspaper to play golf nearby with the actor Keith Allen. I was a bit worried about it because the last time we'd tried to arrange it Keith's manager had told me he'd vanished one some form of lost weekend, and I'd been told by some he could be a bit... volatile. He turned out to be extremely charming, told me a good story about The Incredible String Band and was magnanimous in golfing defeat. P.S. The caption is a lie. The round of golf only took four hours, after which I relieved the pony from his duties.
