one of our newest volunteers is a first year undergrad who ran a typewriter repair business out of his parents' garage during high school. now he's fixing our duplicating machines - including this Ditto spirit duplicator (we just need to get the spirit recipe right and it'll be perfect)
RIP to Margaret Hamilton. Her picture hangs out in our storage media demo box, so we can talk to students about getting to the moon on 1/6000000th the RAM of their iPhone. www.

"Its significance is more interesting than that. It was one of the machines experimenting with the relationship between computers and music before that relationship became completely ordinary." I'm a huge MAL fan and in their newsletter you learn a ton about the history & sociology of media tech! 🧪

we're having a MAL-o-ween art party on Wednesday Oct. 14th! We'll be in the main lab from 3-5 with snacks, a collaborative zine, and plenty of spooky dusty tech to make art with - including a newly-fixed 1940s spirit duplicator!
This is in one week! It will be fun!
we'll be hosting a collage-your-own-tarot event in the MAL pop-up space (CASE building, room W250) all day on October 12! Join our fantastic grad resident Colleen and explore the history of tarot as a technology of meaning-making and make your own cards!
it's fun how much bodies are antennas
it's so cool and also so derpy
is this the weirdest way we have ever tuned in to 1190.radio? maybe! that is, yes, an AM radio adapter cassette.
you want to see 20 year olds trying out flag semaphore through a window and morse code from across the room, right? I thought so! #othernetworks @mediaarchaeology.bsky.social
We're very excited to announce that our new MAL Correspondent, Marin Mendell, will be writing short articles about artifacts and experiences in the lab. Her first piece, on the Yamaha CX5M, is available to read in our latest newsletter & also as a standalone on archive archive.org/details/yama...
October newsletter is up because we are very prompt and professional mediaarchaeologylab.ghost.io/october-2/
You can also find a print-ready version of the zine at https://
archive.org/details/lisazine
Our new zine, 'How to Spend Ten Years Repairing a Computer and Why You Should Too', is here! We'd like to send out some free copies, so the first 50 emails with the subject line "Zine, please" to [email protected] will get a copy (U.S. only, sorry folks)
the MAL embassy will be at Whaaat?! this year - join us if you can https://

lovely Saturday afternoon spent listening to the radio and finishing up construction of the very human, intentionally rough zine @rose-alibi.interferencer.com and I made for the @mediaarchaeology.bsky.social: "How to spend ten years repairing a computer and why you should too" #othernetworks
