We're looking for a new director!

Would you like to make a substantial impact on Scotland’s small press scenes and help uplift self-publishing creators? Small Press Scotland CIC is looking for a new director to join our existing team as a partner. You will assist with and oversee event organisation, community engagement, and development of resources and strategies to educate and assist creators working across many creative fields.

This is a volunteer, unpaid role for the immediate future; all current directors are working on a volunteer or contractor basis dependent on project funding. If full funding is received for our 2027 programme and beyond, we expect to pay all directors a rate of £20/hour for approximately 200 hours a year.

📍 Location: Remote, but most of our events take place in the central belt and must be attended in-person. Successful applicants MUST reside in Scotland; remote work from other parts of the UK is not possible. ⌚ Total hours: Estimated 200 hours a year, about 5 hours a week.

BIG NEWS! ThirdBear Press will be opening for submissions for our 2027 collection of comics from 1st October - 1st December. We are looking to publish 3 or 4 new stand alone, single issue comic books (28-32 pages) by UK based creators during the 2nd half of 2027.

Artists Now have opened bursaries for UK artists to put towards their professional development. If you're not already a member of Artists Now you can sign up and apply for the bursary.

Artists Now Bursaries support visual artists at every stage of their career to develop their artistic practice and professional development. 

You can apply for between £500 and £1,500 towards a tailored programme of activities that will help you develop your skills, knowledge, networks, opportunities or professional profile. We’re looking for applications that demonstrate a clear opportunity for development and explain how the proposed activities will have a meaningful impact on your practice. 

The bursary can support a range of activities, from professional training, mentoring and research to residencies, networking and specialist advice. It can also contribute towards some of the costs associated with developing your practice. 

Key information 
Who can apply: Current Artist members of Artists Now 

Bursary amount: £500 to £1,500 

Applications open: Thursday 17 September 2026, 12pm (midday) 

Application deadline: Thursday 15 October 2026, 12pm (midday) Your application should describe a plan of activities that is tailored to your development. There's no set format, but you should explain how your proposed activities will help you develop your practice, skills, opportunities or professional profile. 

Your plan might include: 

Learning new skills through professional training, courses, mentoring, coaching or peer learning 

Research and development, experimentation or collaboration 

Residencies tailored to your practice 

Networking with artists, galleries, organisations and other relevant partners 

Visiting exhibitions, events or locations relevant to your work, including travel, accommodation and subsistence 

Developing new audiences or markets for your work 

Portfolio development 

Professional memberships 

Business development activities or specialist advice to support your practice
