A study led by Princeton researchers developed an early-warning framework that uses emissions and technology indicators to predict potential failures in decarbonization pathways years before they are apparent in emissions data.

Princeton researchers used machine learning to construct the first national-scale, high resolution map of groundwater levels across Brazil: https://bit.ly/4rLrlYp

The map could help scientists study the effects of both farmland irrigation and climate change.

(a) 90 m resolution map of water table depth (WTD), the median output of the random forest model. (b) Map of prediction uncertainty, the interquartile range of WTD predictions from the ensemble of 300 trees in the random forest model. Both maps (a) and (b) outline the major hydrologic regions. Zoom-in on a section of the São Francisco hydrologic region with overlays of center pivot irrigation systems (ANA & Embrapa Milho e Sorgo 2019) (c) for the WTD and (d) model uncertainty. WTD map captures large spatial variability in WTD, capturing the stream network as well as deep WTD near sites of known groundwater pumping by center pivot irrigation systems. Uncertainty also varies in space, with clear increase with predicted depth.

Princeton does a "take your professor to dinner" thing where students can invite a professor to dinner at the dining halls. A few students in my Chinese DH class invited me to join them last night. It probably seemed small to them, but it is moments like this when my work feels most meaningful.
