๐Ÿ™Œ Huge thanks to the researchers, engineers, sociologists, practitioners, economists, our co-hosts at Universiteit Gent, and sponsors like MAIUM for helping make space for every discipline!

3๏ธโƒฃ Technical evidence powers real-world implementation โ€” pairing data, spatial modeling, and pilots with clear storytelling and community engagement bridges design and action. Engineering rigor plus a willingness to test makes implementation achievable.

2๏ธโƒฃ Combining data models with human experiences โ€” the best work mixes quantitative metrics (conflict analysis, speed tracking) with qualitative studies on accessibility, gender, and health. Hard data plus interdisciplinary insight creates systems that are both robust and inclusive.

Here are the 3 main takeaways that resonated most at the conference: 1๏ธโƒฃ "When a city makes space, life appears": Filip Watteeuwโ€™s Ghent Circulation Plan showed that big street changes often meet resistance until people experience them.

These news from Scotland are very motivating, and show how willing people are to cycle if they have the conditions to do so safely and comfortably. Interested in reading more about the findings, including some charts? Check out the full report here: buff.ly/KwoOEML

Cycling Scotland recently released the findings of their latest survey. It turns out that bikes *can* beat the Scottish rain! On streets with improved cycle routes, the share of people cycling has increased significantly compared to past years. On one street in Edinburgh, they even outnumbered cars!

Great news from Scotland! Cycle lane networks are breaking records: "In Glasgow, three streets that have all had high-quality protected cycle lanes installed in recent years (...) recorded their highest ever number of cycle journeys."

Lanes alone arenโ€™t enough. To keep walking and cycling safe as summers heat up, transport planning must include urban greening and shade.

@urbancyclinginstitute.orgOct 3, 2026, 2:29 PM

In 885 cities across 32 countries, tree cover on cycle lanes averages 17.2%โ€”dropping to 10.5% in cities with the most heat-stress days. Southern and eastern cities lag behind northern and western ones in active mobility conditions.
