Hot take: your haunted village needs 3 buildings, not 30. A chapel, a mill, an inn with one lit window. The rest is fog the party never reaches. At a table of 2-3, fewer places means every door matters. Which three would you keep? anvilnink.com #ttrpg #worldbuilding
GM tip: end the night with a door left ajar. Resolve the plot fully, then give each player one 10-second beat they cannot explain. The scarecrow now faces the road. Your lamp still burns, empty of oil. Zero prep.
ANSWER: bones. 'Bonfire' was 'bone fire'. A 1380s sermon says that on St John's Eve folk burned clean bones, no wood, because dragons hated the stench and the smoke drove them off. GM use: your village burns something odd every year and nobody remembers why.
Medieval trivia: before it meant a party, the word 'bonfire' meant something much grimmer. What were villagers actually burning, and what did they think it kept away? Guess below. anvilnink.com #ttrpg #medievalhistory
PLOT HOOK MONDAY: the bridge keeper takes no coin. He takes one small thing you will never miss, and he is never wrong. Your wizard pays a spell she forgot she knew. Across the river, the miller's daughter casts it. anvilnink.com #ttrpg #dndplothooks
GM tip for small tables: never hand players the monster's weakness. Hand them three rumors. One true, one false, one half true. Two or three players will argue it out themselves, and you just ran an investigation with zero prep.
Answer: narwhal tusks. Norse traders sold the spiralled tusks as unicorn horn and courts paid small fortunes for them. Denmark's coronation throne is built from the stuff. The fake horn never caught a thing - steal that for your game. anvilnink.com
Nobles paid small fortunes for "unicorn horn" to dip in their wine and catch poisoners. What were they really buying? Guess below. anvilnink.com #ttrpg #medievalhistory #unicorn
Using #DungeonDraft to make some #VTT #battlemaps for Halloween. This is the first 3 : a pumpkin patch at day, then at night when a great pumpkin grows, and then the next day after you destroy the great pumpkin.
Would you rather get one location in several states, or more separate maps?
Every Halloween one-shot, one player tries to romance the monster. Not defeat it. Not banish it. Woo it. The vampire gets a sonnet. The ghost gets flowers. The scarecrow gets asked to the harvest dance. What's the least romanceable thing your player ever tried?
A pumpkin patch planted on a necromancer's grave. The roots broke the seal. Farmers are vanishing and the jack-o'-lanterns carve themselves.
The Great Pumpkin - zero-prep 5e one-shot, 2-3 players. Book 1 of a 5-week October arc.

GM tip: running a horror one-shot for ONE player.
- Give them a nervous NPC companion. Solo players go quiet; a companion turns thinking into talking.
- One thing that hunts them beats ten ghouls.
- One reroll for the night.
- Use the silence.
Answer: they're apotropaic marks, better known as witch marks. The flower-like circles are hexafoils or daisy-wheels, drawn in one endless line to trap a spirit that had to keep following it. The letters - often VV - invoked the Virgin of Virgins, Mary. Intresting right?
You spent all week on the villain's big speech. The lich rises, spreads his arms - You fools, did you truly believ- and an arrow takes him in the throat. The rogue was already in his pockets. What is the fewest words your big bad got out before the table killed him?
Eight Halloween one-shots, one vault.
A vampire masquerade, a village where the silver bell just cracked, and a five-part arc that runs your table to an All Hallows finale. Zero prep, fifth edition, 2-3 players. $18.99 for all eight:
GM tip: you can't out-monster a two-person table. So don't. Take things away instead.
Roll a die behind the screen when nothing is happening. Look at it. Say nothing. Their imagination builds a worse monster than you could.
Spooky season starts now.
