I've been working with @eam0.bsky.social, James Brunton, and @slowtech2000.bsky.social on a systemic critique of EdTech practices using a model for degrowth pragmatism to effect meso-level change. Clare and I developed this figure to help illustrate the theoretical approach...

Infographic outlining a model for degrowth pragmatism using a tree with visible roots

Micro level (leaves on tree): Vetter’s Matrix of Convivial Technology (2018) Appropriateness/bio-interaction, Relatedness/adaptability, Accessibility, Life-cycle/infrastructures

Meso level (tree trunk) Degrowth pragmatism: Reframe problems from individual behaviour to systemic conditions; Provide non-binary, context-sensitive solutions; Embed care, conviviality, and sustainability into EdTech practices; Enable incremental yet transformative practice changes

Micro level (roots of tree) Jones’ degrowth vectors (2020): Simplicity, Conviviality, Care, Ritual destruction of accumulation

I did a slightly uncomfortable thing and put myself forward for election as @altuk.bsky.social Trustee. I've spent many years voluntarily serving the EdTech community and hope to support the board with the trust and care necessary to sustain and grow the ALT community. altc.alt.ac.uk/blog/2026/10...

Thanks to @jenr.bsky.social for getting me into digital degrowth in the first place, and to @discoursology.bsky.social for the inspiration to explore the 'forwardlash'.

This slide seemed to go over well during my presentation at the Postdigital Backlash conference in Zagreb last month, so we have shared the figure openly:

doi.orgA model for degrowth pragmatismThis figure visualises a pragmatic model to digital degrowth in education. Using a micro, meso, and macro framing, we position degrowth pragmatism as a practical, ground-level model for change, which builds upon Vetters' (2018) micro-level Matrix for Convivial Technology and Jones' (2021) macro-level, theoretical assessment of educational good using four vectors of degrowth. Our meso-level approach is informed by our collective experience and scholarship as educational technology practitioners (Molloy & Thomson, 2023a; Molloy & Thomson, 2023b; Molloy et al. 2025). I have done everything possible to keep Mary cool during this heatwave. This evening I found her in the hottest room in the house, at the hottest time of day, perched upon a corduroy stool that had been pushed into the last available sun spot before the sun started to set.
