Thanks for pointing that out. But Weekendavisen is read by a very small elite in Denmark. This ought to be covered by public broadcasters DR, TV2, as the largest news outlets in the country. And this latest story covered by the Guardian was nowhere when I looked yesterday.

People are now asking me if it is true that the Ukraine attack on a Yandex center in Russia has caused a drop in bot activity on their favorite platforms. I want to answer "You are a victim of the trope of immateriality! Read up on how data networks work!". But I just choose to sigh and explain.

I just checked Danish news media...and there's nothing about this horror. Maybe it already passed by in the news cycle. But this is definitely taking up any noticeable space in the public discourse there. Which is on brand for the country I grew up in, unfortunately.

This is why an introduction to philosophy course should be mandatory for all college students, regardless of major. Just like it was in days of yonder.

No, thank YOU. For your work, but also for that author attribution...which is the best thing since Internet pioneer Danny Cohen published papers under the name Professor James A. Finnegan of Oceanside University in Kansas.

However, several studies also show that when AIs encourage co-thinking, they actually improve cognitive capacity through increased metacognition. So it really is use-it-or-lose-it. Universities should adopt scaffolded, Socratic AIs instead of just buying bulk subscriptions to ChatGPT.

Given that a correlation has been found between spatial memory in taxi drivers and the volume size of the hippocampus, it is likely that offloading to GPS directly influences the physical volume of the hippocampus. So yeah, offloading changes your brain.

@mortenbay.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 5:09 PM

You're welcome. I gathered a whole bunch of similar papers for a webinar presentation.

Most were directly AI offloading-related but there's also this interesting one that shows how spatial memory is impacted by offloading to GPS'es.

To be fair, this IS the kind of weirdness we see in L.A. every single day...thankfully.

@mortenbay.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 5:14 PM

One study I always start my classes with now to show my students how quickly the "use it or lose it" effect is for the brain and encourage responsible AI is this one. It shows that when you put a person's arm in a cast and stop using it, the brain ceases communication with it within 48 hours (!)

@mortenbay.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 5:10 PM

In fact, there is already overwhelming empirical evidence that cognitive offloading decreases cognitive capability. Some studies even demonstrate differences in actual brain region size. So I highly doubt we will ever see those studies, Shannon.

Next, we'll have papers from Anthropic and OpenAI discussing if beating on a wafer of silicon constitutes domestic violence. Or if stopping the flow of electricity to transistors etched in silicon constitutes murder. This is all so depressingly stupid.

After many years of listening to the whole catalogue this has crystallized for me as their best work. In terms of cohesion, innovation and just overall quality of the music, I think it just edges out DSOTM because of its sonic qualities.

This reminds of back in the day when a very popular (white, male of course) YT influencer described his morning routine and how some Indian guru had told him to make his bed every day as a mental exercise. I think most people's mothers deserve some kind of financial compensation for that now.

Instead of renaming AI to SI, we should begin describing the products we have as IA: Intelligent Automation. That's much closer to what they actually do and it implies that a human is still the initiator. (And the French could change their current IA term to AI)

Listen to women of color. They have known intersectional oppression their entire lives and thus have the sharpest injustice radars of us all. It's not coincidental that those of them who are also AI experts now say, in unison, that AI doomer rhetoric is a distraction from real injustice.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment.

Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Hey, don't forget co-writer Shmargaret Shmitchell!

(Whenever I tell my students about this paper, I point to with @mmitchell.bsky.social to show how great brains can have great senses of humor, but also to set the baseline for the power Google wielded (poorly) in firing @timnitgebru.blacksky.app)

And it seems Walken was actually there from S1! My memory is shot to bits.
