New on The Dig: Confronting Labor's Crisis w/ Micah Uetricht & Chris Brooks It’s no surprise to our listeners that the US labor movement has long been in serious crisis - but we might soon be hitting a point of no return, after which the revival of organized labor might not be possible.

How did China become able to build so much, so quickly? It expelled the capitalists. Listen to Ben Tarnoff and Quinn Slobodian on our latest episode, Muskism

Ben Tarnoff quote arguing that China’s rapid building reflects state control over investment—rooted in a communist revolution that expropriated capitalists—rather than engineers’ dominance, a legacy Silicon Valley won’t contemplate.

South Africa has been labelled a 'reactionary futurist state' that uses high tech for backward political ends.

The country's political economy is key to understanding Musk.

Musk helped create our technological infrastructure - a tool that people used to undermine conventions of gender, sex, class, and race. That’s why he sought to control these platforms - to ensure that they strengthened a conservative social order.

Great discussion of Muskism on @thedigradio.bsky.social: how speculative finance, state power & hard infrastructure combine to build a reactionary future. And lovely to hear @quinnslobodian.com give my work on reactionary futurism a shout-out alongside Becca Lewis’s! thedigradio.com/podcast/musk...

Many books have been written about how foolish Musk was when he acquired Twitter.

But instead, they should be arguing that it was a shrewd decision that set him up for the manipulation of public opinion.

new @thedigradio.bsky.social is v good. nice to hear it said clearly that the aim of the ai takeover isn’t ‘nobody has to work!’ it’s that capital no longer needs labour and thus labour has much less power over capital

This is an excellent listen: @thedigradio.bsky.social with @quinnslobodian.com and @bentarnoff.com about their recent book. I went in cautiously b/c I can't spare another brain cell for Musk, but the emphasis is squarely on the 'ism'. Super interesting analysis.
