Have to say though, I expect little from media that have no real stake in the lives of people who are not their core audience. Expecting New Yorker to investigate the electoral roll mess and the chipping away of the independence of Election Commission of India is expecting too much

@rishpardikar.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 3:46 AM

The headline would have made sense if the report was about electoral roll revisions and if it came months ago when Indian media was also investigating and reporting about such issues. Picking this moment when people are fighting back to say "end of Indian democracy" is odd

@rishpardikar.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 2:37 AM

The only way for someone to believe this moment marks "the end of Indian democracy" is if they believed we had a functioning democracy these last few years. We did not

@rishpardikar.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 2:33 AM

Odd headline. Hi @newyorker.com, the cockroach protests are a glimmer of hope for the survival of democracy in India. Millions in the country are suffering under the weight of 12 years of gross incompetence and authoritarian tendencies of the Modi government. Peoples' power and protest = democracy

How a massive earthquake in Eastern India led to the birth of modern seismology.

Very interesting article by Utsa Bose on the consequences of the Assam earthquake of 1897 on the field of seismology, public interest in science and its reportage.

Good paper on 'Equitable Transitions Away from Fossil Fuels' (ETAFF). Worth a read in full, especially considering the misconception that equity runs into conflict with ambition and science

Crucial point on the importance of reducing vulnerability and building overall resilience rather than focussing merely on early warning systems. There are around 15,000 glaciers in the Himalaya. Monitoring them all for warning signs would be near-impossible eos.org/thelandslide...

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

Australia and Türkiye rely on coal, gas, & oil to generate respectively around 90% & 80% of their domestic energy needs. Australia is also the world’s third-largest fossil fuels exporter. Given such dependencies, how will the #COP31 presidencies tackle the fossil fuel question?

At COP30, there was a push for a "fossil fuel roadmap" to enable a transition. The flood in Nepal is also set to add momentum to calls for mitigation & loss & damage finance. But the #COP31 presidencies neither list fossil fuels as a priority agenda nor loss & damage

To clarify, I was referring to negotiation asks that could end up being good for the world as a whole. Like collaboration in science and tech

@rishpardikar.bsky.socialSep 27, 2026, 6:52 AM

Some amount of fossil fuels will remain for a while, no? I doubt any modeller would confidently project "phaseout", as it is commonly understood. But the trajectory of coal is quite clear. With all the electrification in transport, we might see oil also pushed out
