🔥Wildfire emissions can affect air quality far from where fires are burning. During summer 2026, several smoke plumes from North America crossed the Atlantic towards Europe, while fires in Indonesia exposed populations to very high PM2.5 concentrations.

Global total estimated fire emissions were the second-lowest in the 24-year CAMS dataset for September 2026. However, Indonesia recorded its third-highest September monthly total estimated emissions, contributing to Asia having the highest estimated fire emissions of any continent.

Behind every weather forecast lie millions of observations gathered from satellites, aircraft, ships, buoys and other instruments.

ECMWF monitors these instruments throughout their lifecycle, from their rollout and evaluation through to their retirement.

🌍 In 2026 (through 15 September), 51% of the global population was exposed to very or extremely poor air quality due to ground-level ozone. In Asia, 53% experienced extremely poor levels.

2026 cumulative daily total fire emissions for Indonesia to 30 Sept continue to keep pace with previous El Niño years of 2015, 2019 & 2006. #CopernicusAtmosphere GFASv1.2 data available via Fire Emissions Watch apps.atmosphere.copernicus.eu/fire-emissio... @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social @ecmwf.int

Cumulative daily time series of fire emissions from Indonesia for 2003 to 2026. As of mid-September the 2026 emissions are keeping pace with the increased fire emissions during previous strong El Niño years (i.e., 2015, 2019 and 2026)Time series of daily total estimated fire emissions from Indonesia between 1 July and 31 December for all years between 2003 and 2026. Daily total emissions for 2026 have been consistent with those of the previous strong El Niño years of 2015, 2019 and 2006.

🌫️ Air pollution knows no borders. Around 2 billion tonnes of sand & dust enter the atmosphere every year. In 2026, smoke from North American wildfires regularly reached the Arctic & crossed the Atlantic to Europe.
