This is not the time to ease pressure on Russia, and Europe won’t. On Monday, EU Foreign Ministers intend to approve the biggest set of sanctions listings targeting Russia’s war machine since the start of the war.
The best news to wake up to ahead of the morning round.
Congratulations to Sagal, who has led such a positive campaign. Thank you to the brilliant Labour team and members who made this win possible.
Britain is backing Labour’s message of hope.
Three years have passed since the horrors of October 7th. My statement below on the appalling cycle of violence in Israel and Gaza and why a two state solution remains the only hope for a just and enduring peace.
finally, we independently tested the whole BBC News at Six TV package on the speech, since this sort of thing is how more voters would actually experience the speech in reality. All the major metrics increased significantly! Impressive.
@steveakehurst.bsky.social is skilled at his craft and his thread on on public response to PM speech is worth a read in full.
The headline findings supports my hunch, Andy is being well recieved by the electorate, because he had the courage to make a big argument.
The transition to clean and green energy is already saving us money.
It's our job to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, not to slow it down.

Too often, our politics has been defined by excessive caution.
A fear that some issues are simply, "too difficult" to confront.
Yesterday, Andy Burnham changed that. He reminded us of something that should be elementary in politics - the power of making an argument.
More evidence of UK economy’s strong first half to the year, despite the very real impact of the Iran war: - ONS have revised up growth (and gdp/capita growth) in Q2 to 0.5% - confirms the UK as the fastest growing economy in the G7 in 2026 (given growth of 0.6% in Q1)
One of the bravest speeches I have witnessed.
Andy Burnham's address took personal and political courage.
From a National Care Service to a much closer and stronger relationship with the European Union.
The PM has my support in turning this from a vision to a reality.

NEW: Labour MPs tell Burnham to show ‘high ambition’ and move closer to EU
@andrewlewinmp.bsky.social told a @britishfuture.bsky.social event the PM could open “a conversation now about the single market and the customs union, with a view to putting it to the country in a couple of years.”
Delighted that interest in the Citizens Advance continues to build.
We've come a long way since I first pitched the idea just under two years ago. Very grateful to @smfthinktank.bsky.social for all their work and support.
Lots more to come. Stay in touch via

We’re acting to support those who can’t rely on help from the bank of Mum and Dad. Our Your First Home scheme will help more families get their first rung on the housing ladder with a deposit of just 2.5%. Less to save upfront and lower monthly costs. Help is on the way for first-time buyers.
Stepping it up in Holborn & St Pancras!🌹 Pleased to be on the doorstep supporting Sagal to be the next MP. Recorded a healthy step and stair count and found lots of support for Sagal and the Labour Party. Great to campaign alongside Alex Ballinger in the autumn sunshine too.
Well said Rishi Sunak.
Democratic politics must continue to be a contest of ideas, not a fight about skin colour defining your identity.
There is much on which Tory & Labour politicians disagree - on this we must unite.
He's right about the power of cricket too 🏏

Petrol and diesel up 23% in a year. Fossil fuels are driving up costs and inflation. Net zero ain’t just good for the planet. It’s good for our pockets too.
Crypto billionaires can't be allowed to dictate the terms of UK politics. We urgently need to change our system. I would start by introducing an annual cap on political spending for all parties. It's never made sense to only have a cap in General Election years and it's not sustainable any longer
or to put it another way, good news for first time buyers

Absolute privilege to speak at the National Housing Federation conference today on homelessness. Lovely to share the platform with incredibly talented women from the sector. Also great to catch up with colleague, Andrew Lewin who was speaking at another panel at the conference.
We don't need to play by Elon Musk's rules. In the Commons yesterday, I commended Lisa Nandy on her decision to leave X and take DCMS off the platform. I left more than a year ago, for reasons that will be familiar to people on BlueSky. I would like to see the whole government follow her lead.
