The Everglades are the ancestral home of the Miccosukee and Seminole peoples. On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the tribes who have cared for this land and water for generations and continue to lead the fight to protect it.

Working on an upcoming talk with @geocollaborate.bsky.social....with so much misinformation out there (intentional and unintentional), asking questions, science credibility, and building trust are more important than ever! 🧪

@elprager.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:35 PM

We're excited for this event and to have a little fun while talking about a serious topic - Combating misinformation. We need to build trust in science and scientists, questioning what you read and see is a big part of that. If you're looking for speakers and agree....get in touch! 🧪🌎

It has been a quiet six weeks on the earthquake front. Is that normal? Our new tool will tell you, live-updated every fifteen minutes using the USGS earthquake feed.

Bullying in science and life is unacceptable. Here's a story I probably should have shared more often. 🧪

Quite a scene at the Delaware beaches Saturday 🛶 Flooding is deep enough for kayaking in the streets of Bethany Beach. 🌊 Just up the coast, huge waves are pounding Rehoboth Beach. A powerful, slow-moving nor’easter continues to batter the coast. Photos by Robin Koralek and Tyler Moore

Rip currents are possible this weekend along the East Coast from Maine to Florida. Always follow advice from the local beach patrol and flag warning systems. And check your beach forecast before heading out: weather.gov/beach

Map titled "U.S. Rip Current Risk" showing composite data for September 25-26, 2026, from the NWS National Hurricane Center.

Legend:

Risk Levels: High (red), Moderate (yellow), Low (white), No Data (grey).

Cyclone Types: Depression (red circle outline), Storm (red icon), Hurricane (red hurricane symbol), Post-tropical cyclone or remnants (red circle with 'x').

Map Overview:

East Coast: High (red) rip current risk spans along coastal areas from Southern Florida through Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Long Island, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, with Moderate (yellow) risk extending into Maine, portions of Florida, and Puerto Rico.

Gulf Coast: Mostly grey/white with localized Moderate (yellow) and High (red) risk along the Florida Panhandle and southern Texas coast.

West Coast: High (red) and Moderate (yellow) risk along Southern California.

Offshore Tropical Systems: Hurricane Odalys and Hurricane Polo are shown south/southwest of Mexico in the Pacific.Rip Currents: Know Your Options. Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer away from shore. If at all possible, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current: 1) Relax, rip currents don't pull you under. 2) Don't swim against the current. 3) Swim out of the current, then to shore. 4) If you can't escape, float or tread water. 5) If you need help, yell or wave for assistance. The image shows a rip current as a narrow flow of water moving in a line directly away from the beach, with waves on either side moving in the opposite direction towards the beach. Arrows point away from either side of the current and into the waves, parallel to the beach, indicating the path of escape from the rip current.

Why learn science? Because lots of things can seem like a big scary conspiracy theory when you don’t understand how the world works! Empower yourself by learning about facts and evidence and reality. As a bonus, it’ll lead to a healthier and more prosperous society for others around you.
