We’re the grassroots community effort to stop ODOT’s polluting, costly, dumb freeway expansions. Climate leaders don’t widen freeways ❌🛣️❌

this is of course the next move after we officially kill the proposed $3 billion rose quarter freeway expansion that intends to double the width of I-5 into the backyard of Harriet Tubman Middle School, instead of removing the freeway it entirely and replacing it with homes transit and parks

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

This fails to consider that one more lane will fix it

Last week, ODOT breathlessly congratulated itself on completing a highway expansion project near Salem "on time and on budget."

only problem is, the project was actually $20 million over budget. They just lied about it.

8600+ Oregonians took the Governor's survey on what they want to see in a future transportation package.

What a surprise! People want to fix the damn roads, expand transit service and build safer streets.

Oregonians are not clamoring for ODOT to spend billions on freeway expansions. #orleg #orpol

Probably a good time to cut statewide transit funding and spend billions on freeways #orleg #orpol

Did you know if you build fewer/smaller highways you have to spend less on maintenance? Crazy I know. I will never understand why we pour billions into the most space and cost inefficient transportation option, saddling us with massive future maintenance debt, while public transit gets crumbs.

Oregon's roads are in *terrible* shape - among the worst in the country! - and yet Governor Kotek, the Oregon Legislature and ODOT are still thinking about spending *billions* on a single hwy project to double the width of I-5 instead of maintaining our state's existing roads and bridges. enough!

Don't want to spend your life stuck in traffic congestion? Turns out, the best way to prevent traffic congestion is to stop building billions of dollars of miles of freeway and instead invest in transit.

This matters because this is an important lesson, a potential teachable moment for all of us, about how the transportation system works. Expanding highways in urban areas results in what is called “induced travel”–the greater supply of road capacity prompts people to take more and longer trips than they would otherwise. That’s why widening roads to solve congestion never works–roads, no matter how wide, fill up and become congested, like Houston’s 23-lane wide Katy Freeway which actually is slower after its most recent expansion than it was before. This is what economists now call the “fundamental law of road congestion.” And this fundamental law also works in reverse: take away some of the capacity, and as everyone of these supposed Carmaggedon’s shows, traffic evaporates. Once we understand that traffic responds to supply, we can recognize we can limit traffic by not building so much capacity.

Cannot wait for 2029 when President Ocasio-Cortez signs an infrastructure bill that dedicates $100 billion to reviving the Reconnecting Communities program, with stipulations it can only be used on projects that actively tear down urban freeways and replace them with parks, transit social housing

There are like 5 open positions on the Portland Plannign commision, and over the next year its gonna be doing some of its most important work ever.

You need to apply 🫵 (I would myself, but I'm in school)

You have the weekend before applications close.

eliminating I-5 for a week seems to have caused remarkably minimal disruption to Portland's regional traffic flows. so why again do ODOT, Governor Kotek and the Oregon Legislature think we should spend three billion dollars (!) to literally double the width of lanes on I-5 through North Portland?

I’m really excited for the release of @transitcenter.bsky.social Narrative Change project, and proud that Ruth Rosas from Nondrivers Alliance was part of the cohort that helped develop this work. Most of all, it’s really affirming to see the dignity and fairness frame as the top performing message.

the freeway expansion proposal has been on the books for at least a decade; it's a bigger tussle than just tom dundon
