Using #ALMA Observatory, astronomers studied what makes the gas in these places so much more efficient at star formation. The researchers identified 10 distinct stellar nurseries within the heart of NGC 253 and mapped the distribution of about 40 different molecular species.

Meet NGC 253, aka the Sculptor Galaxy! 🌌 At ~11.5 million light-years from Earth, it is one of the closest starburst galaxies to the Milky Way. Starburst galaxies transmute gas into new stars up to 1,000 times faster than typical spiral galaxies!

🗓️ Countdown: 40 days til NRAO’s 70th anniversary! #NRAOat70 #NRAO70years
NSF NRAO devoted 340 hours of VLA observing time to system tests and reception of Voyager's telemetry, and there were 40 scheduled telemetry passes from 26 April through 28 September 1989.
NSF NRAO began planning and preparations in 1982; phased-array observing tests on Voyager and planets began several years before the encounter as more antennas became outfitted for X-band.
#ThrowbackThursday Did you know that the Very Large Array helped with NASA’s Voyager 2 mission? 🛰️
The VLA was used with Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Deep Space Network in Goldstone CA to track NASA’s Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune in 1989.
NEW ➡️ Cosmic Cocktail: Exotic Methanol Discovered in Planet-Building Zones
New results from COMPASS! A major survey of young stars by #ALMA has spotted a rare form of heavy methanol - the first time this molecule has been detected in space.
