Calling all artists, streamers, and citizens of the internet!
#SavetheVaquita Week is Oct 11-17th, and you can help!

With fewer than 20 left, these little porpoises are almost gone and hardly anyone knows about them. Let's change that by flooding the web with vaquita content!

Share and read on!
+

Save the Vaquita Week October 11-17th 2026
With fewer than 20 estimated remaining, the vaquita is the most endangered marine
mammal on the planet. Found only in Mexico's Gulf of California, this little porpoise
is a relative of whales & dolphins and is the smallest of the cetaceans.

Vaquita are accidentally caught in illegal gillnets set for the totoaba fish, and they
sadly drown as bycatch. Fishermen seek out the totoaba for it's swim bladder
which is valued at many thousands of dollars in illegal markets.

Without intervention, the vaquita will soon be gone.

But you can help!

For one week, the goal is to flood the internet
with vaquita content. Use #SaveTheVaquita to
share art, videos, streams, and more on any
platform. If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot!

I'm (briefly!) back home from the field after a week-long dinosaur dig in Utah, so let's do some #paleontology Q&A before I leave again for a wedding tomorrow.

Join us for the *only* stream this week @ twitch.tv/paleontologizing

It's our LAST DAY digging at the ankylosaur bonebed with @prehistoricmuseum.bsky.social

so tune in LIVE, ask us questions, and watch us work to excavate the last of these bones for the year at twitch.tv/paleontologizing

This is something I think about *all the time* as a science communicator. Twitch, where I do most of my online outreach, is geared toward long form explanations, and that's one of the reasons I like it so much. I want to help people *grow* those attention spans

If you are part of an academic society or a professor of any kind, public statements that you do not condone Drexel cutting off the academy of natural sciences from the public of Philadelphia is very important right now. We need your voices. Urgently.

We're a little overwhelmed by just how many ankylosaur bones and osteoderms we're finding out here at Lorrie's Site, and you can tune in and hang out as we work @ twitch.tv/paleontologizing

Here's a freshly-found Gastonia osteoderm (with a visually helpful plastic Gastonia model) for #FossilFriday out here at Lorrie's Site in eastern Utah.

This is the world's largest and most prolific ankylosaur bonebed, with all the specimens we're excavating going to @prehistoricmuseum.bsky.social

You reach the Gates of Hades & find them guarded by this: (πŸ“·: USFWS)

Spooky Season has officially begun, and we’re kicking things off with a three-headed ferret.

OK, technically it’s three black-footed ferrets, but October calls for a little imagination.

Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are one of North America’s rarest mammals. At the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center, staff work to breed and recover these endangered little creatures and return them to the wild.

Cute? Absolutely. Three-headed monster? Only in October.

It's currently down to just three of us in the ankylosaur quarry today, so tune in for some cozy dinosaur excavation vibes @ twitch.tv/paleontologizing

If you care about keeping the Academy of Natural Sciences open to the public in Philadelphia, I need you to read and share this thread. Trish Wellenbach was sent from the mayor's office to oversee the Academy of Natural sciences situation. She needs to hear from us. Here comes the action item:
