All the data Watershed + @riveractionuk.bsky.social compiled for this investigation has been added to our Watershed Pollution Map, so you can explore what's occurring at a wastewater treatment plant near you, via:
Thought the sewage scandal was bad? Think again.
Sewage works are also a major industrial waste disposal route. Power stations, airports, hospitals, landfills: ~608bn litres last year. No independent regulator.

Water firms made £340m+ from it. Works can’t remove most chemicals in contaminated Heathrow wastewater. PFAS anyone? It ends up in rivers, seas, farmland. With River Action I built a database of 26,000 consents to show the scale. And mapped it: watershedinvestigations.com
NEW BRIGHT SPOTS: How countries with hot climates, fast-growing economies, expensive energy, and fragile grids turn to solar.
Not because of policy. People and businesses voted with their feet.
I told @theguardian.com “Every home constructed today that runs on fossil fuels is a liability for the occupants.”
They also made part of my statement the headline: “We need less political point scoring.”
608bn litres of industrial wastewater entered sewage plants last year.
Sources include power stations, abattoirs, landfill, some with consents for chemicals such as mercury + cyanide - entering plants not designed to treat such waste.
Our new report, out now:
Pollutants that survive treatment are discharged into rivers, lakes + seas as “treated effluent”.
Chemicals that bind to solid waste can end up in the sewage sludge spread on farm fields as fertliser.
Our new investigation with @riveractionuk.bsky.social:
Wind and solar helped the UK avoid US$7.8 BILLION in gas imports during the Hormuz crisis. That’s what breaking fossil fuel dependence looks like. Governments backing more oil and gas owe people an explanation. SCALE UP RENEWABLES.
Water companies made £340mn last year accepting industrial wastewater they don't have the facilities to adequately treat.
“Industrial pollution must not become a lucrative business for water companies" says Amy Fairman of @riveractionuk.bsky.social.
Our report:
So we are to believe that limiting record breaking US diesel exports of 1.9 million barrels per day will not help US consumers. But buying one tanker of 275,000 barrels of diesel from Putin somehow will help US consumers. Perhaps the media should look into that math and those lies.
"gas continues to receive public finance not because it consistently represents the most economically efficient option, but because institutional incentives, legacy investment models, outdated analysis & geopolitical interests have been slower to change than the economics of the energy transition."
And some people would have you believe (often using made up figures) that net zero is the costly option! Without net zero, climateflation only gets worse and worse from here.
Soot from wildfire smoke doesn't just irritate your lungs—it crosses the blood-brain barrier. A landmark new report reveals how climate pollution drives neuroinflammation.

Tories overstate net zero cost by nearly £500bn in apparent spreadsheet error.
Essential listening: "Poor household air quality can affect people’s health, & high pollution levels can lead to increased risk of cardiovascular, respiratory & neurological disease. With the kitchen being a primary pollution-producing area in the home," .../2
Despite being banned in more than 60 countries around the world, we still use so much #atrazine in the U.S. that over a quarter of our rivers and streams are contaminated with a carcinogen.
We owe it to our kids and to ourselves to ban atrazine across the country once and for all.

The SEC issued a rare report this week putting investors on notice that some climate risk advocacy could trigger investigations. The focus was a campaign against ExxonMobil.
In the most landlocked region of the planet, aquaculture is booming. But fueling the industry’s rapid growth is forced labor.
