The federal occupation of Minnesota must be understood as an assault not only on the people of the state but also on fundamental democratic principles of due process, equal protection, and rule of law.

Here's an interview with Stuart about the premise of the book: dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

The care that has been put into building DIGGER’s artificial world offers a compelling answer to a question the film otherwise affectedly shrugs off: What, after all, is art for?

@dissentmag.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 6:43 PM

Like the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series, DIGGER delights in its own theatricality. But the film takes so much pleasure in autocritique it borders on autoerotism.

“ A Blood-Red Tide … “I’m very good at the knockout stage, … starting Tuesday, the Bolsonaristas better watch out because we are going to beat them!” No one doubts Lula’s disposition, but the results of the first round suggest he is swimming in uncharted waters. How high is the tide?“

With a media federation, cooperative publications have the opportunity to keep their momentum going by making their readers part of the story and changing the industry for the better.

The problem in Brazil is not simply Lula’s record; across Latin America, the far right is feeding on a weakening belief in the ability of existing institutions to deliver what people want.

Great piece in @dissentmag.bsky.social on the need for shared services among media co-ops, featuring our work at Start.coop to do just that: dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

Even when economic conditions improve, as they have by most metrics under Lula, the benefits are countermanded by the stresses of everyday life in an age of mounting precarity that reinforces the sense that democratic governments can’t or won’t solve Brazilians’ problems.

How many readers are still paying for journalism? How many subscriptions have ended? How will they impact the year to come? Is it still realistic for there to even be a year to come?

Lula won Brazil’s presidency in 2002 as part of a wave of progressive, anti-neoliberal governments born of social movements that remade Latin America. The dominant political current running through the hemisphere today is darker.
