From record-breaking rain in Tokyo to the spectacular flowering of Chile's Atacama Desert, El Niño is influencing weather patterns far beyond the tropical Pacific.

Sea-surface temperature anomalies across central-eastern equatorial Pacific, where El Niño develops, is forecast to reach 3.7°C above normal for the Oct-Dec 2026 season.
Set to be the highest on record and stronger than the previous record in late 2015.

Isaias has become the 1st hurricane of an exceptionally quiet Atlantic season.

@noaa.gov @nws.noaa.gov says Isaias is strengthening & expected to approach northern US Gulf Coast as a “dangerous hurricane” on Friday. Storm surge & hurricane warnings in effect.

Asia and Africa were the most affected by water-related extreme events in 2025, according to the WMO #StateOfWater Report.
Several African countries experienced widespread flooding while South & SE Asia experienced compounded effects of cyclones & monsoons.

It's been an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season - partly due to El Niño. But not in the Pacific.

🌀 Hurricane Polo intensified rapidly in the Eastern Pacific and is currently at category 4 strength, with maximum sustained winds near 240 km/h.
