Imagine if with 28% of the vote, our system awarded 28% (not 46%) of the seats 🗳️

Most modern democracies have figured out better ways to reflect the voters' wishes. That the USA is a laggard is no surprise. Canada should - must - do better.

Proportional representation is long over due.

Why is it so hard to change the system so every vote counts? Especially in the face of gerrymandering coming to Canada

Electoral Reform is absolutely key to preserving democratic institutions in the age of misinformation and AI.

First-past-the-post creates big-tent parties where small factions can seize control.

Proportional representation would allow distinct parties to run independently, giving Albertan Conservatives options that are not beholden to fringe separatist factions. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Great article and couldn't agree more. Among other injustices, the Green Party of Canada never got any of the representation we deserved from 4 to 6% national support (at peak). And of course Trudeau broke his promise to enact it when he could have.

I want proportional representation so badly in Canada. I like the decentralization of power, the forced cooperation between differing parties, and the way it gives APPROPRIATE voice to the the nuts on far left/right without ignoring them completely or giving them too much power. PR, LFG!

"the bankruptcy of first-past-the-post"

If the threat of PQ eventually pushing forward with a referendum on separation with 30% mandate from the voters doesn't get @mark-carney.bsky.social to act on #ProportionalRepresentation, I don't know what will.

Ford tearing out Toronto bike lanes is pure math: sacrificing urban ridings he doesn't need to win suburban voters. Proportional representation ends this cynical game. When every vote counts everywhere, Conservatives must appeal to cities and Liberals to rural ridings.

An graphic created by Fair Vote Canada titled "Doug Ford's Targeted Decisions: Hit safe opposition seats". The top half displays a map of Toronto electoral ridings colored blue for Progressive Conservative, red for Liberal, and orange for NDP. Black indicators map out targeted locations concentrated entirely in orange and red opposition-held ridings: the Bloor St, Yonge St, and University Ave bike lanes, Ontario Place, and Billy Bishop Airport. The bottom half outlines these three areas in detail alongside icons for a bike, airplane, and building. Text clarifies that targeted bike lanes on Bloor, University, and Yonge, the expansion of Billy Bishop Airport, and the redevelopment of Ontario Place are all situated in opposition ridings. A prominent red banner across the bottom reads: "SAFE OPPOSITION SEATS DON'T HELP HIS MAJORITY. So he can sacrifice them to win over suburban swing ridings."

In an excellent article for the Observer, @maxfawcett.bsky.social explains why Mark Carney should use his political capital to deliver proportional representation.

Quebec just proved how first-past-the-post distorts results across parties.

The Quebec election was yet another example of the flaws inherent in our first past the post system, one that rewards division and creates false majorities.

Mark Carney should fix them. #cdnpoli

Great CBC article on how first-past-the-post has distorted Quebec's democracy.

The PQ, QS, and PCQ all committed to electoral reform during the election campaign. Now is the time to make that happen. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Monday’s Québec election offered one of the most egregious examples of first-past-the-post failure in modern Canadian history. We must be rid of this broken system, which gives far too much power with far too little of the vote, writes @christoaivalis.bsky.social.

Poll modeling shows Doug Ford's PCs could win another majority government on just 34% of the vote. First-past-the-post bails out unpopular governments while the rest of us suffer. We need proportional representation so governments always represent a broad majority.

A screenshot of a post by Polling Canada (@CanadianPolling) with the text "PC Majority on these numbers" above a table displaying political party polling projections. The table lists party percentages, projected seats, and seat ranges: Green Party (GRN) at 5%, 2 seats (range 2-2); New Democratic Party (NDP) at 27%, 33 seats (range 27-41); Liberal Party (LIB) at 26%, 20 seats (range 13-29); Progressive Conservative Party (PC) at 34%, 66 seats (range 52-78); and Others (OTH) at 8%, 3 seats (range 2-4). Below the table is a quoted post from Polling Canada detailing Ontario Provincial Polling results and percentage changes from the 2025 election: PCPO at 34% (-9), ONDP at 27% (+8), OLP at 26% (-4), GPO at 5% (-), and Others at 8%. The polling metadata notes Mainstreet, Sept 29, 2026, a sample size of n=1062, a margin of error of 2.8%, and IVR methodology, ending with a link to check out more details on @338Canada.

Fantastic video by @paige.canadiancivil.com on how first-past-the-post is failing Canada and why it's time to finally embrace proportional representation.
