Today we're out in the streets.

We're here because climate action cannot wait any longer.

Our message to policymakers: A fossil fuel phase-out plan. Concrete. Fair. Now.

💚There are thousands of us. Where are you?

🇮🇹 In Italy, policy choices account for more than a third of the electricity bill.

The result is a vicious circle: Italy remains exposed to expensive imported fossil fuels, while its tax system makes the cleaner alternatives less attractive.

Another fossil fuel crisis. Another round of windfall profits. Difficult winter ahead. The clock is ticking. Tax the war-driven fossil fuel windfall profits.

🌍 The community has also shared its experience beyond the neighbourhood through a practical replication guide, European projects, conferences and support to other emerging energy communities. 5/6🧵#buildbetterlives

⚡ But the project is about more than generating electricity. Households experiencing energy poverty can participate without an upfront investment, pay a substantially reduced annual fee and retain the same voting rights as other members. 4/6🧵#buildbetterlives

Today, the Telheiras/Lumiar Renewable Energy Community generates renewable electricity through solar photovoltaic systems installed on public buildings and shares it with nearby residents, small businesses, condominiums and local organisations. 3/6🧵#buildbetterlives

One of the ideas was: “Let’s produce our own renewable energy and share it among neighbours.” Turning that idea into reality took years of collective effort, technical support and persistence. Coopérnico supported the community with technical and legal guidance. 2/6🧵

What can happen when a neighbourhood decides to produce and share its own renewable energy?💡In 2020, around 300 residents of Lisbon’s Telheiras neighbourhood came together to think about how they could make their community more sustainable.

#TheCostOfMethane

6/6 🧵

@caneurope.orgSep 28, 2026, 9:59 AM

What's missing is full implementation of existing methane abatement technologies - and a legal framework that holds suppliers accountable. Robust implementation of the #EUMethaneRegulation is a critical first step, but the destination must remain a full phase-out of fossil gas by 2035.

5/6 🧵👇

@caneurope.orgSep 28, 2026, 9:59 AM

And this isn't a cost problem: around half of these reductions across the EU's top eight suppliers can be achieved at negative or near-zero cost, since recovered methane can be sold or reinjected straight into the supply chain. 4/6 🧵👇

@caneurope.orgSep 28, 2026, 9:59 AM

Include methane emissions from oil operations, and that potential more than doubles. In other words, fossil fuel suppliers could unlock significant supply simply by stopping the leaks - while the EU continues the transition away from fossil fuels. 3/6 🧵👇

@caneurope.orgSep 28, 2026, 9:59 AM

CAN Europe's new policy brief shows the scale of the problem - and the opportunity: across the EU's eight largest gas supplier countries, methane abatement could recover the equivalent of twice the EU's 2025 LNG imports from Qatar. 2/6 🧵👇

@caneurope.orgSep 28, 2026, 9:59 AM

Europe’s cheapest gas this winter is the gas it’s leaking out of the pipes. As energy ministers gather for the informal Energy Council amid a renewed push to reopen EU Methane Rules steered by France, one question can't be ignored: how much gas is wasted before it even reaches the EU market? 1/6🧵👇
