I'd love to see a community fork that keeps pushing it forward, and keeps focusing on innovation. Or, just maybe entirely new runtime variations.

@jasnell.meOct 10, 2026, 10:40 AM

Oh, no doubt there's effort involved. But it's also not starting from scratch (on both the community building or codebase) or making a hostile fork. The point is, there are more options here than, "oh well it's dead"

Sorry, that was flippant on my part. You're right

🎉 [email protected] adds conditional revalidation for QUERY requests

Express 5.3.0 code example. An app registers a QUERY handler on /reports that sets an ETag header of "12345" and sends a JSON array of results. A comment shows that a QUERY /reports request with If-None-Match: "12345" now responds 304 Not Modified, where it previously returned 200 with the full body.

I mean, it's great to see the positive sentiment about Deno... but it *is* an open source project. It's not going away, it's just that the team that's been working on it will be doing other stuff. The ecosystem can easily pick it up and run with it.

Obviously I think Workers are the ideal migration target, but @netlify.com is a solid choice also. Options are good.

Mostly, of course, due to agents.

Fun fact.. Node.js was downloaded nearly 900 million times in July alone.

It's an ECMA Standard now. ecma-international.org/publications...

I'm currently also working on identifying the common minimim Node.js compat API surface to go along with it.

@jasnell.meOct 9, 2026, 2:00 PM

True. It doesn't help to keep pushing something that is just... Done. But choice in the ecosystem is essential to avoid stagnation. I'd hate to see the experimentation stop.

@jasnell.meOct 9, 2026, 1:52 PM

Definitely. The repo isn't going anywhere and there's lots of time to work out an open governance approach for it. Think we just need to hear more about what the ecosystem wants to see happen.

On-demand CPU and memory profiling for Cloudflare Workers and Durable Objects is now available. Now you can generate interactive flamegraphs directly in production to quickly track down memory leaks and performance bottlenecks. https://cfl.re/3VZaOEd

One thing I'm hoping to come out of this is that Deno... or at least a derivative of it, is picked up by someone in the ecosystem and continued. We need choice and diversity in the ecosystem.

Some key important bits... Deno will continue to receive bug and vuln fixes for at least the next year. JSR will continue to run and be supported.

So.. a thing happened.

Companies have a deep rooted *obligation* to invest in human development and connection more than they do in AI development. Companies that fail to do so will ultimately not survive whatever we historically end up calling this transitional period we find ourselves in right now.
