This would crumble to nothing. Very brittle little crystals. Though maybe I could polish/buff it with a dremel or something

Finally trying to look at this rock I found a year ago and finding some nice actinolite in there. I need to get a proper macro lens to photograph these things (they're too damn expensive). Whaddya think I should I do with this guy?

He's still out there, as I type this. Collecting nectar. Flying around with his weird tiny wings. Dumb bee.

This will support all the raw images and within the same time frame as before.

Users and anyone interested is invited to join us on the OpenPlanetary Slack channel #planetary-raw-images. There we will be discussing API changes, use cases, and feature requests.

You can join OpenPlanetary slack for free here:

As part of NASA's efforts to modernize and unify its websites, the raw image websites (Mars 2020, MSL, Psyche, Cassini, InSight) will be unified into a new tool. This will try to maintain as much compatibility as possible, but there will be some necessary changes.

ASA is undertaking an effort to modernize and unify its websites. As a result, there will be some changes to the Raw Images websites (active missions Mars 2020, MSL, and Psyche, and completed missions Cassini and InSIGHT). We are unifying the raw images sites across all supported missions, while attempting to retain as much compatibility as possible. Nevertheless, there will be some changes.

We are aware of the amazing work being done by dedicated enthusiasts and others using these sites, and want to make sure that we minimize disruption to your sites and tools. We therefore invite anyone who is interested to join us in the OpenPlanetary slack, in the #planetary-raw-images channel. We will be previewing our API plans there and - critically - want to hear about your use cases. What features do you most need? What modifications to our plans would make your life easier? What would you like to see on the site that isn’t there? While we can’t promise anything at this point, we will look at all requests to see if they’re doable in our schedule and budget.

The software installed and runs natively into Linux (Fedora 44 KDE), which is HUUUUGGGEEE. The developers (and Claude probably) have a ways to go, but it's a great start.

New project to recreate the Adobe programs using open source tools... Shows promise

Six months have passed since the #ArtemisII mission and NASA has just released the reentry video from the Orion capsule!

Here is a timelapse of the reentry, but be sure to check out the realtime version linked below! 🔭🧪

I was up on a hilltop in Santa Clarita mainly to take photos to make a large mosaic of the Sierra Pelona anticline. I also got a bunch of nice sunset shots as well.

It was interesting... While I was photographing them, they would be resting on the ground. Then all of a sudden it would fly up, pick a fight with another butterfly, chase that guy off (or be chased off), then land and rest again. Rinse and repeat.

The rings cross the sky brilliantly, seeming to disappear behind the fiery sunset clouds of Los Angeles yesterday.

Original: flic.kr/p/2sEHSJe

A brilliant west-oriented orange sunset view. The foreground hills are in silhouette. A line of clouds are rendered a vibrant pink, lit from below by the reddened sunlight. Wide back-lit planetary rings cross the sky from top left to center, disappearing as they descend through thicker atmosphere, slightly bending due to atmospheric refraction. Titan and Enceladus occupy commanding locations above and to the right.
