@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 9:54 PM

@MMagdowski I see. Congrats!

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 9:43 PM

@MMagdowski totally unrelated, but: why does it say memory could not be "read"[sic!]? What would be the difference from unhyphenated reading?

@gedankenstuecke @tante * This is the only way I can rationalize some of the more glaring oversights with so-called "AI" in both academia as well as engineering - aside of intentional misrepresentation, obviously.

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 9:13 PM

@gedankenstuecke @tante That's kind of my experience as well coming into the field as a physicist. Instead of building (mental) abstractions of what relations to model and which hypotheses to use for that, more often than not, for computer scientists, "the observations *are* the model" instead […]

@gedankenstuecke @tante I stopped recurring on that sometime in 2024... 🫠

This is the funniest thing I've seen today, possibly ever

A tweet by SarahStarberry that says "oh god read the vertical axis" on top of a chart measuring AI models' release dates and model numbers rather than any real capabilities

@gedankenstuecke @tante It's not just that, but also that in order to have enough training material for larger models the inputs necessarily get more repetitive, hence exacerbating any bias in the inputs.

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:36 PM

@tante E.g. take quickshell. I've been building personal dotfiles for a little over a year now and I have something that can rival many of the bigger installments for the functionality that I personally want out of it, imo.

Should I boycott it now that it's funded by omarchy? Sure.

Is it […]

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:32 PM

@tante I take some pride in following through my announcement to leave when the takeover talks were still ongoing. As a seasoned Tesla hater by profession*, I don't regret leaving.

I still feel though that both the usable part of FOSS and the web at large are shrinking. And that's not just a […]

There was this consensus of not going to X after Elon Musk turned it into a right-wing hellhole but I see more and more especially journalists going back "because the AI people are there". Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea […]

I just tried this out (for science, obviously):

https://github.com/Niko1221/Strata

On my RTX 5090 it's fast as fuck.

This is the final nail on the coffin of any #OpenAI or #anthropic #IPO.

They will so crash and burn. (Bye bye #oracle.)

LLMs really have put the academic publishing system of "publish or perish" into a death spiral: arXiv introduces a limit of two submissions per month for 'authors'. Academia has been broken for a long time, but this really lays it bare… Fair Moderation, Equitable Access, and AI: arXiv’s Updated […]

@benjamineskola @bitprophet If you open up your browser three or four times in between updates, you just cannot get back the cycles you spent on that compilation (and it would be even better to get a binary anyways.)

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:51 AM

@benjamineskola @bitprophet One slight addendum: There's e.g. the "pgo" (profile-guided optimization) USE flag for #firefox. It will measurably improve the performance, but it will cost twice the compile time.

Is it worth it? Sure, sounds like a good idea.

Is it worth it on every machine with […]

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:47 AM

@benjamineskola @bitprophet That being said, on my main workstation I'm being a total #gentoo #larp, running ~amd64 and compile everything with -O2 because I can and want to, but for my other machines I'm way more selective and will use binaries whenever I can UNLESS there's a specific reason […]

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:44 AM

@benjamineskola @bitprophet The downside of this is of course that obviously, browser packages like #firefox or (dangit) #qtwebengine are huge and eat many CPU cycles from compiling, whilke at the same time the potential benefit from optimizing specifically these packages (and leaving out stuff […]

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:42 AM

@benjamineskola @bitprophet If, on the other hand, you can leave out #AI stuff from something like #firefox, an application that you use for hours each day, shaving off twenty minutes of compile and making your website tabs load faster in the range of seconds (as compared to ms with #CUPS...) […]

@ftranschel.norden.social.ap.brid.gyOct 2, 2026, 8:41 AM

@benjamineskola @bitprophet I know this is not for everybody, because let's be honest, most people would not be able or willing to even catalogue their usage of very exotic binaries they have no business differentiating.

Like: Is it worth compiling CUPS with -O2 to get a few ms of spooler […]
