Here is an amazing review of Ben Wickey's More Weight by @katebeaton.bsky.social - and how it touches on a lot of the things we are facing as a society right now.

If you haven't read DUCKS it is a masterpiece as well and also sadly relevant.

More Weight is the kind of book I always hope will fall into my hands, but rarely materializes. I have not been so enthralled by a comic for a long time. Ben Wickey’s cartooning is a masterwork, the style shifts and reconstructs as we go on, his characters are lit from within with true emotion. He deftly brings you face to face with 1692. This is a work that satisfies, as the telling of a story, as an understanding of that story in our culture, and as the reckoning of a descendant who lives with that history in his very bones. The Salem Witch Trials are not just a historical event, they are an anguished insight into a foundational American soul that we constantly look back to without being able to change either the outcome or who we are. But it is Wickey’s desire to tell the story both as meticulously as it happened then, and as confounding as it lives among us now, that sets More Weight apart. In a story so often misremembered, but here, no fact is taken for granted, no stone is left unturned. It is an archaeological excavation of a book, in the greatest sense, because we naturally want answers to the unfathomable, but sometimes all we can do is carefully scrape away time bit by bit, and get as close as we can.

ha! Well, they couldn't do worse than online trolls ever have, in my case, so I won't lose sleep over it.

For any Goodreads-ers, there is a giveaway for "Rebecca" there right now, and well, who doesn't like the possibility of a free book?

Today is the release day for Rebecca, the book by myself and Sydney Smith that I am so proud of. And it is probably the first pairing of Color Me Badd and Ashokan Farewell in a video. Maybe. www.instagram.com/p/DdmvW5ETl4I/

REBECCA - written by me, illustrated by Sydney Smith. It comes out tomorrow. I am very proud of this book, and greatly indebted to Sydney, who took a personal story and made it timeless. I hope you like it.

Did I, a 56 year old cat dad, just pre-order a children’s book about a cat who escapes outside and had adventures, for myself. Yes, I did!

Meatball is an indoor cat who escapes outside to be a wild cat, where he poops wherever he wants, hunts for his meals (badly), & learns the true meaning of home. I can't wait for you to meet him. Preorder your copy today!

So far, two starred reviews that I am happy to share, as I am very proud of this book. With Sydney's art, it is the most beautiful book I will ever have my name attached to. www.publishersweekly.com/9781250349019

I have a new picture book coming out in September, one that is very personal and means so much to me. Any librarians heading to Chicago for #ALAAC26 - you can stop by the Macmillan Booth #2525 to grab a galley of REBECCA. Words by me, art by the incomparable Sydney Smith. @mackidssl.bsky.social
