Thirty-two US states still allow child marriage. Two states have no minimum age limit, and kids as young as 10 are married in the US. Astonishingly, some progressive groups defend child marriage as "child rights." This is nuts. My @nytopinion.nytimes.com column: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/10/o...

Congrats to Navi Pillay, veteran human rights lawyer and leader of efforts to create accountability for human rights abuses from South Africa to Rwanda to Gaza, on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. She's an emblem of the human rights legal system now under attack. www.nytimes.com/live/2026/10...

“Trump’s war may have actually increased the likelihood of Iran’s making a drive toward a nuclear weapon…A new measure before the Iranian Parliament proposes withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and 32 Iranian figures have called on the country to do so. That would be a cataclysm.“

I'm in awe of the world's dissidents who risk torture to stand up for human rights and democracy--like those in @megankstack.bsky.social's terrific piece for @nytopinion.nytimes.com about a grim authoritarianism choking Uganda, with China's help and US indifference. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/08/o...

Meet the hardest-working dogs in Northwest wine country! Their résumés include vineyard security, forklift rides and tasting room greetings. Meet the crew behind the vines.

Man and woman kneel in a vineyard; woman holds a cluster of green grapes while a large white dog nuzzles her.

The secret of a great wine isn't just its terroir but also the vineyard dog. We wish Connie could see this tribute to her and others, for behind every great wine is a great dog. sipmagazine.com/meet-the-dog...

@nickkristof.bsky.social writes "Trump and Iran have a history of overreaching. It doesn’t help that Trump’s chief negotiators, Jared Kushner & Steve Witkoff, are real estate investors chosen for their closeness to Trump rather than for, er, their diplomatic savvy."

Trump claims he's winning the Iran war. Meanwhile, an Iranian leader says Iran has brought the US "to its knees," Iran is considering escalating, and there is talk in Tehran about leaving the NPT and pursuing nuclear weapons. My column on Trump's mess: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/03/o...

We're a little miffed that the Fat Bear contest was won by an Alaskan bear. We think our bears on Kristof Farms are just as rotund as well as more sophisticated (ours dine on Pinot Noir grapes!). Here's one of ours, inspecting our wildlife camera. KristofFarms.com

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing

Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

A terrific piece about which educational interventions are cost-effective: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/28/u... It notes the effectiveness of things like science of reading, small group tutoring and grading schools, while other things people like don't measure up.

The legendary Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been awarded (in abstentia) the Vaclav Havel Prize in Europe. She has campaigned relentlessly against compulsory hijab and other abuses and was arrested most recently in April. Brava, Nasrin! pace.coe.int/en/news/1042...

I've said that David McCloskey is the best thriller writer since LeCarré -- and his newest, "London Station," proves it. Just brilliant plotting and psychology about how CIA officers deal with a crisis in the context of a president rather like Trump. @wwnorton.com

The China-US summit this week will be unusual, because this time it is arguably the Chinese leader who will have the leverage -- because of a series of steps that President Trump has taken that weaken America. My weekend column: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/19/o...
