What a WEEK. Thank you as always for your support of Flaming Hydra! 🔥
I had no idea what to expect when I saw SLAM FRANK, a hip-hop musical about Anne Frank (and lots of other things) but I definitely did not expect to be thinking of Ishmael Reed as I walked out of the theater, so I wrote up my thoughts for @flaminghydra.com:
Flaming Hydra covered it already flaminghydra.com/hegseth-full...
TODAY: Arwa Mahdawi on a right-wing tilt among her gay former friends. “As well-off gay and lesbians in Western countries have secured their own liberties, a not insignificant number seem to have shifted to the right.”
This piece by Kate Wagner will resonate with my disordered-mood crew and their families no doubt. I'm not crying, you're crying. Okay, we're both crying. @flaminghydra.com
ALSO TODAY: @kolatubosun.bsky.social in DC. “Lafayette Park, where I had once walked freely, was now sealed off, and the president was far away, beyond a chainlink fence, like a prisoner in a jail built by his own hand.” flaminghydra.com/my-d-c-odd-y...
TODAY: @sarahweinman.com on the unanswered questions of “Slam Frank.”
“Slam Frank is looking to deliver a different experience to its audience. But what, exactly? The musical seems to spend the entirety of its 110-minute runtime trying to figure that out.” flaminghydra.com/whos-owned-b...
Grieving today at so much needless death and ruin.
Kafkaesque essay about the thrill of predicting something real bad by @g-kwiatkowski.bsky.social
This was incredibly well written; please give @annaleen.bsky.social a chance to tell you (in better words than I can) what it feels like inside, and after, academia. (And supporting @flaminghydra.com is never a bad option!)
TODAY: Three years after the October 7 attacks and the beginning of the genocide in Gaza, a selection of our work on Israel, Palestine, and this ongoing moral and humanitarian catastrophe. www.google.com/url?q=https:...
"Indeed, the university system depended on my ignorance; most of the labor of teaching and research at tier one institutions is fobbed off on grossly underpaid graduate students who will never get tenure-track jobs." oh boy, an painful one.

This is your brain ... in academia. My latest for @flaminghydra.com is about how my experience getting a Ph.D. shaped my latest novel, A WALL IS ALSO A ROAD.
ALSO TODAY: @g-kwiatkowski.bsky.social on AI, writing and prediction. “Sometimes something I have feared comes true. Later I return to a sentence I wrote before it happened. The sentence has not changed. The world around it has.” flaminghydra.com/predictive-t...
TODAY: @annaleen.bsky.social on recovering from academia. “There is no simple way to talk about intellectual trauma, but it is very real.” flaminghydra.com/academia-bro...
Dave McKean was one of the earliest adopters of Photoshop in comic art production, making his thoughts on "AI" especially trenchant and poignant.
In 2022, artist Dave McKean was AI-curious: so much that he made a whole comic book out of AI prompts. Now, four years later, he's sounding a very different, and ominous, note.
At @flaminghydra.com, a conversation with Dave McKean on the future of technology and art.
TODAY: @zachrabiroff.com in conversation with the artist Dave McKean on the current and coming horrors of AI in art. "We’re entering a world of insanity. And I mean that quite literally. We’re not going to be able to discern what is real and what is not real." flaminghydra.com/issue-662/#a...
Scientists who comprehend the pleasures of discovery—the human part of science—are the bringers of progress, as Nobel biologist P.B. Medawar showed so entertainingly and well, back in 1969
Had a lot of fun revisiting this favorite writer for @flaminghydra.com
