But I think that our idea of Indigeneity is a product of a shared history that is quite separate from what Elderfolk have experienced. I think a conversation between Elderfolk and ourselves on the topic would lead to many furrowed brows, and Elderfolk have very impressive brows to furrow. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜Š 6/6

Do I personally think that Redwoods tukhรฉ and Banyan maosa, and adiamag of the Plains can each claim sociocultural indigeneity over their respective lands, cultures, and histories given the length of time and the unusual nature of continuity within Enclosure? Yes. Yes, I do. 5/6

@wreybies.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 1:23 PM

But in the Redwoods, thatโ€™s a very defensible statement. Kaila is the living embodiment of this fact as Head Scribe and as a tukhรฉ woman whose own history is a chapter in the sociocultural โ€œBook of Redwoods Tukhรฉโ€ she curates. Donโ€™t picture a physical book. Kaila IS the metaphorical Book. 4/6

At the same time, Elderfolk have lived in their respective areas of Enclosure, creating cohesive communities and cultures that vastly outstrip anything we have on Earth as regards cultural continuity. No human culture can say โ€œwe have records and material culture stretching 100k years.โ€ 3/6

@wreybies.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 1:23 PM

What โ€œcolonizerโ€ and โ€œcolonizedโ€ mean to us on Earth in the modern-day - the historical context in which those ideas arise - doesnโ€™t really apply. Every hominin within Enclosure was brought there by a force outside their control. No one in Enclosure made tall ships to go out a-conquering. 2/6

@wreybies.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 1:23 PM

Indigeneity is kinda hard to apply to the Enclosure, given that it is an artificial world originally created by beings with technology so far in advance of our own that Clarkeโ€™s 3rd Law is splashing everywhere like a lawn sprinkler without anyone really being aware. ๐Ÿงต 1/6

Not a one of us gets to pick where, when, and how we pop out, but I do sometimes wish it had been much later, during a time when being queer was easier and being autistic was better understood. 4/4

Subtextualized "representation" was there, and maybe that was fine for some, but to me it just reeked of having to hide, that I was shameful, that my story could only be told through innuendo and inference. 3/4

Hard to believe Frank penned the most infamously grotesque queer character in all of Science Fiction in front of his 15 y/o gay son, Bruce C. Herbert. No, not Brian who continues to play in daddy's sandbox, but Bruce, of whom you may have never heard. He passed in 1993. 2/4

Born in 1970, what I can say is that I wish positive queer representation had come around sooner. Pretty much the only queer narrative character I remember from days of youth was Baron Vlad Harkonnen of Giedi Prime. Not exactly an image to strive for. ๐Ÿงต 1/4

Angie's already been transported to Enclosure, so... This ain't her first rodeo. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Also, she's Gen-X, so she's quite comfy with 8-bit.

We're gonna old-school Donkey Kong this bidness. ๐Ÿ˜…

Shame it has to be redone. That's actually quite a nice cover. Good balance and flow.

Them: "That... that wouldn't work. People wouldn't do that." Me: "I'm sorry, have you not been paying attention??? There are people ready RIGHT NOW. This is for those who would still stop them."

Live-streaming an execution & promoting it as entertainment isnโ€™t the end-goal. The end goal is for you to be desensitized to it, so that next time you might actually find it entertaining, so that when they ask you to do it with your own hands, it doesnโ€™t seem so freakishly out of the ordinary.

That's a great cover! ๐Ÿ˜Š His song "Penny Rabbit & Summer Bear" is a very different vibe from his orchestral pieces, but when I imagine Angie and Kaila falling for one another under the canopy of the Redwoods, this is their song. ๐Ÿ’ž

And the "full woody" version. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The last of the 1980s granny sofas, this one with fully exposed wood frame.

This is the version with snazzy wood accents.

Being Gen-X from North America is knowing that the late 1970s drag on until the end of 1983, and that this monstrosity came in three distinct variants.

This is the fully upholstered version.
