horror story in five words challenge: “Ross Douthat YA fantasy novel”

Screenshot of a fuckin tweet from actual publisher WordOnFire (heard of them before? I hadn’t) that reads “Brand-new novel from bestselling author
@Douthat60, The Falcon's Children, is available for preorder now: amazon.com/dp/1685783775
This novel will be released through Word on Fire Luminor in June 2027.” There’s an image of the terrible cover that looks like shit and Douthat’s awful face. I checked the amazon link and it’s real, God help us all

The Trump administration is investigating nine universities -- including Stanford, Harvard, and MIT -- for alleged fraud related to visas commonly used by postdoctoral researchers, a core part of the nation’s biomedical workforce. My latest for @statnews.com

Being a "visionary" in something technical requires deep background in the subject (in this case, materials and chemistry). This does not look like it, at all. It's just another iteration of a tech bro fever dream, where you can do anything with computers. Sadly, you can't. And it's not real.

The dude is in retail and management. Not chemistry. As a practicing chemist, I call bullshit, with extreme prejudice.

I strongly suspect this idea that American culture had embraced Trumpism, had embraced right-wing populist nationalism, made institutions more inclined to fold."

I broke into the bank. I wrote a program and used it to break into the bank. I instructed a program I bought to break into the bank. The AI agent that operates on my account using my resources broke into the bank. These are equivalent statements.

It is a true gap in capability, and an AI safety problem.

Artificial intelligence agents are increasingly being used to interpret and even conduct science. But are they able to accurately distinguish science that is solid from science that is subpar? cen.acs.org/policy/publi...

As shortcomings of the agents become apparent, researchers are proposing strategies to help them improve their outputs.
