Putting the terminals together and what is said and shown in the Bungie Halo games, Humans aren't Forerunner, but rather are the inheritors of what they left behind. In a sense, they are the NEW Forerunners and bearers of the Mantle.

I just read through the terminals. The Librarian directly implies that she was on Earth for the construction of the gateway, and the firing of the Halo Array. She referred to the inhabitants and planet as special, and safely indexed the inhabitants prior to the array firing.

The terminals are literally in Halo 3 hidden about and were there since release. They were the first to even mention stuff like the Librarian and Diadact.

It doesn't? Halo 3 and it's Iris terminals/ARG imply they were two different, but still related, civilizations. They weren't the full blown aliens of Halo 4 and beyond, but they weren't THE human civilization, but rather an offshoot.

The intent in Halo 1 and 2 was that humanity WAS the Forerunners. Halo 3 was the first one to imply they were different civilizations, but Forerunners were still humanoid and related to Humanity. Then came 343 Industries and they just made them two entirely different species.
