LAcon V apologizes for the inaccessibility of the backstage ramp on the arena main stage and for hurtful, ableist language used during the Hugo Awards Ceremony rehearsal.

We are very sorry for the harm that was caused.

Our full apology can be found here:

Fuzzy says they miss all their friends and to stay tuned for a few more recaps from #LAconV before we sign off!

Fun fact, I watched the recording of Amal El-Mohtar's wonderful speech later because I spent the majority of it backstage in a state of senseless shock. I cannot express how immeasurably grateful I am to the SFF community for this honor. NEV would call you Those Kind Readers. Thank you all.

Bluesky can't handle FB links easily, so here is a cap of my note of thanks to this Saturday's performance of The Failure of the Century at @laworldcon.bsky.social

Home from Los Angeles Worldcon, which was great! I managed to miss almost everyone (that wasn't the great part) unless they came by the PM Press booth in the dealer's room to say hi to me. Hotel lobby hamburger dinners for half-a-hundred bux just ain't for me, what can I say?
The Failure of the Century went amazingly well. It was a very "stagey" staged reading—99% a full performance except that the actors were on-book. Huge thanks to Scott Edelman Cody Goodfellow Rachel S. Heslin Jim Keller S Elizabeth Ransdell and Josh Wilson. Their performances (and Josh as publisher, house lights flicker-off-er and general dogsbody) were epic. The actors brought their own costumes from home (and made/got stuff such as a massive Egyptian nemes and a fake mustache), and props (typewriter! letter opener!), and special effects (blood! sound montage!) did stage management, and worked out blocking and gestural elements of their performances in an instant, despite only having rehearsed via Zoom previously.
We only got access to the venue and were even able to see what it was like ninety minutes before showtime too. The Worldcon tech crew was also thrillingly competent and hit all the sound and light cues despite zero time to practice.
As no theater company was involved, I'll have to mark the show as "self-produced" on my CV, but it wasn't. The actors and publisher produced it while I just rushed behind them saying that their great ideas were great ideas!
About thirty-forty people came and dozens watched virtually, and we sold many copies of the playscript both right after the show and throughout the rest of the con, including four on the historically dead Worldcon day of Monday.
It was very exciting, and more than a little exhausting. And now it's all over. That's the theater for ya!
Coming soon? Austin, Texas!

SHE GOT A BIG VOICE
@catvalente.bsky.social battles with the PA & automistranscription equipment at her @laworldcon.bsky.social reading, gives up, and goes Unplugged.

Cat Valente looking at a monitor which is attempting to transcribe her speech; it reads "need to bite. So it doesn't matter if it's not actually working, which I think it's not,"The aforementioned monitor, now displaying "actually working, which I think it's not / / I got a big voice."Cat V, having abandoned all microphones, holds her book (well, her tablet) in both hands and preaches to a rapt audience (offscreen, but trust me)Cat V, having been provided a microphone on a boom stand regardless of her big voice, throws up her hands, bravely accepting the cards fate has dealt her

A highlight of @laworldcon.bsky.social was reconnecting with my scifi #writing mentors!

I met Joe and Gay Haldeman through an MIT class and the writing center about 15 years ago. They were so incredibly supportive and encouraging. Full circle moment: now I’m teaching/ mentoring students like them 🫶

The author in question, book and microphone in hand.Same, with a big smile. (The author, not the book.)The author eyes the audience. She knows something we don't know. Mua ha ha.
