IDK. I don't explain or justify. Honestly, justifications and "realism" might be antithetical to this style—Lemony style is facetious rather than servile to the reader, and it embraces fiction's artificial nature rather than trying to be simulationist. I just do it and the reader can DEAL WITH IT!

I think this is the key. Preoccupation with character (and/or narrative voice and author) being Cool is poison to comedy

Almost zero importance or effort. My story having been done a zillion times already and every twist being foreseeable is part of the fun for me. I'm in conversation with those ancestors who have come before! I focus on executing it well and saying what I as a unique individual have to say.

I have exactly one hit for myster* in 1661, so for #LGBTQWriteAThon I'll share this paragraph from chapter 1, Alexander's journey from town to country.

When again the curtain fell, he imagined what he could not see: the grey-green of flat Middlesex starting to rise slowly through pasture and yellow heath, great sleeping hornbeams turning to fingers of pale birch. At which mile the landscape ruled by Father Thames would give way to the hill and wood where he had been bred, he could only guess; he’d last made this journey age three, when he only barely had the facility of memory. How he would be received back into that land was just as much a mystery. His mother believed that all would be well—their neighbours had changed, the villagers scattered, their county turned upside-down the same as all the rest during the late troubles—if they’d made it this far without being challenged, the rest’d be plain-sailing. But if he thought too much of how he’d been dressed when he left Buckinghamshire twelve years ago, Alexander—who never suffered coach-sickness—nevertheless began to feel a little queasy.

Alexander's much-older step-cousin Lord Ingrave is a major character and antagonist in 1660. In 1661 he shows up at the beginning to glower at "bad influence" friend Thomas Hunt (tho of course Alexander is the actual bad influence in that relationship) as in this scene:
#WIPSnips

“They’re in the window,” Klein warned.
Alexander tugged Hunt’s hat-brim down. “You’d best fly ‘fore Cousin Ingrave comes down to shout.”
“I might bear that easier than the parting,” Hunt hiccuped.
Alexander put his hand gently to his friend’s pitted cheek. “But you needn’t. I am not gone forever. We will meet again—as lord and his lawman, perhaps.”
“Let it be sooner than that,” cried Hunt, rueful, though he smiled; “and always as friends.”
“Always, always as friends.”

everyone's accusing everything of being ai these days, so you may as well keep those em dashes

Yeah!! One of the things I love playing with in this story is deconstructing and reconstructing this sort of ideology around honor, nobility, gentlemanliness, etc. I get to write these things as simultaneously toxic and meaningless, AND beautiful and heroic.

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 10:47 PM

He is basically so sure that he is always right, that whatever feels good and fits his goals MUST be honorable. He'll become a bit more able to spot this self-delusion as he matures… Tho' he so loves honesty, justice, &c. that his "I am honor and honor is me" isn't wildly wrong in practice. 😅

Alexander's odder than you might think…

Obvz he'd never compromise his honor, it's dearer to him than life. Except *whispers* honor can mean whatever it needs to mean in the moment.

Morally right = honor!
Good for friends = honor!
Achieves the goal = believe it or not, honor!

I mean, not only are those all good ideas for trapping Blackthorne, I might let myself in as well don't-mind-if-I-do...

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:50 PM

"Great shoes in the right size" actually incredible idea for bait. Gotta have an appropriate pair for every occasion.

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:46 PM

You better be ready for him to arrive FAST, possibly crashing in through the window!!!

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:45 PM

I think he would indeed be trappable with amazing stockings of his own time period but imagine if modern fabrics and designs were also available to bait him with 🤯

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:44 PM

Man, you know he WOULD go for it... I almost wonder if the setup would work just as well if the good-looking guy had a chloroform hankie simply going "haha smell this"

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:41 PM

But what about a mean brute....... 👀

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:41 PM

CURSES, FOILED AGAIN!!!!

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:41 PM

I feel like this would work to attract Blackthorne but he would circle around it and then somehow fishing-hook-and-ten-foot-pole the entire seven course meal and drink out of the trap without triggering it...

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:38 PM

Perhaps this whole scenario was all Blackthorne's elaborate mind game to recruit his foes into helping him find a dang boyfriend.......

@isaacxisaac.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:37 PM

The better to flip his hair in an insouciant manner✨
